Field #2 Construction Update

On 4/29/15, the equipment arrived and began working on our second field, finally. A grader began the task of leveling out the material that had been donated the past five years from several local building projects in our town.

In 2014, a water and sewer project was being done in the Town of Stevensville. An agreement between the between the general contractor and SYS was made to have all extra fill material from the project to be brought to the field construction site. When the contractor was done with the project, the fill material donated was approximately 1,500 yards less than originally estimated. The amount of this shortage was not realized until the initial leveling was performed.

The size of the field was also extended 30 yards to the North to allow for more room to travel between the two fields and to accommodate two fields running side by side, north to south on Field #2.

It was originally estimated that the material collected in the pasty years would be a sufficient amount and that future costs would only include leveling and the placing of topsoil, sprinklers and seeding. Unfortunately, this was incorrect and more fill material was needed.

A donation of material from a local business, Selway Corporation, was initially slated to be used as topsoil. It would be screened and transported to the field. Upon closer review of the material, it was determined that this material would work better as fill material and would not be good topsoil material.

A donation of material from the Missoula Federal Credit Union was also acquired. They have ownership of a subdivision that went through foreclosure and is located close to our fields. There is a large stockpile of material that was cleared for the construction of the building sites. The bank agreed to donate 2,500 yards of fill material to our field project. It was discovered upon excavation of the material that it was very rocky and that the bulk of the Selway material would be better to use as fill.

On 5/15/15, the first phase of the project was completed. A 10 yard dump truck, a 20 yard belly dump truck, an excavator and a grader removed, hauled and leveled 1,770 yards from the bank owned subdivision, and 3,792 yards from Selway Corporation. A compactor was brought in and the site is now ready for topsoil.

The total cost of this phase is $36,215. Donations were given by the three separate contractors for their work and were reflected in their final billing.

Again, the shortage of the material from the town project and the extension of the field by 30 yards increased the cost from the original estimates that were done.

We have several options available to us for topsoil. We estimate the field will require 2,000 yards of topsoil. The estimated cost for the topsoil is $28,000. To haul and level the material to the field is estimated to cost $15,000. If the material requires screening, an additional $9,000 will be required.

We currently have a grant to pay for the cost of the sprinkler heads and valves. We have a quote to install the sprinkler system for $10,400. We also have a quote to seed the field for $1,500.

A story for our local newspaper will be run the week of May 18th to inform people in our valley about our project. Currently, in the Town of Stevensville there are fundraisers being held to build a $200,000 playground and a $225,000 skate park. There is also a discussion of having a bicycle camp built in the park for those that travel through our valley on their bicycles.

Stevensville Youth Soccer currently uses 2/3 of the town park to play soccer during the fall season. With the addition of these other entities, our growing soccer program is in jeopardy of losing most of its playing area. It is now more important than ever that we complete our second field.
