Softball

Softball is offered for girls in grades 1-8. Grades 1/2 is coach pitch, grades 3/4 is a combination of coach and kid pitch, while grades 5/6 and 7/8 are kid pitch and they play in the Quabbin Valley Softball League.  We will also offer a competitive tryout teams in grades 5/6 and 7/8 that plays in the NEYSA Softball League (if we get enough players that are interested).   See below for additional information.

*Games are held in-town and are coach pitch.
  *Season runs from the middle of April through the end of June.  If the weather is nice and fields are ready, we might start a little earlier.  
*Teams will typically meet 2 times per week.  One weeknight time that is set for the season (coach decides) and a weekend practice  and/or game(s).  
*Practices and games typically held at the Mosier School and/or Beachgrounds Park.  We might combine with other towns if we do not have enough teams.

*This division will involve some travel to various Western Mass communities and is kid pitch (grade 3/4 involves some coach pitch). 
*Play is in the Quabbin Valley Softball League: 
*The practices begin early/mid April and go through the end of June.  Games start in early/mid May. 
*Teams typically meet 2-4 times per week.  Practice times can vary and are not set by the week.  
*3/4th home games/practices at SHHS or Beachgrounds Park.  Most practices at the Mosier School.  
*5/6th home games/practices at SHHS or Beachgrounds Park.  Practices at a number of locations.  
*7/8th home games/practices at at SHHS or Beachgrounds Park.  Practices at a number of locations.  


Grade 5-6 (U12) and 7-8 (U14) Competitive NEYSA Softball:

The season will start in April and into late June or early July. Teams typically meet 3-5 times per week and play in the NEYSA Softball league.  This division may require a tryout based on total number of registrations.  This is for the competitive softball players looking for more competition than in the Qaubbin Valley League.  Home  games at the Beachgrounds Park and/or SHHS.  Practices will be at a variety of fields.

The softball equipment requirements differ by the age group and league. We did our best to lay them out below.

7/8th grade requirements:
  • Rubber cleats
  • Softball pants, Coach will dictate color
  • Glove
  • Batting helmet with protective cage. Black preferred. Chin strap required. 
  • Rec Dept will provide a team hat and/or visor and game shirt. We will also have catchers gear and team bats.  
  • Bats are NOT required to be purchased; however, if you decide to, here are the rules: Bat must be marked with the ASA 2000, 2004 or the USA Softball All-Games Certification Mark
5/6th grade requirements:
  • Rubber cleats
