Northwind or Extra?
The AYSO primary program hosts more than 3,100 players every Saturday, but many of those players would like more team experience in a more competitive setting. Our travel club teams, Northwind and EXTRA, offer great options. A player must participate in Region 418's primary program to be eligible to play on either EXTRA or Northwind.
EXTRA is an AYSO program that our region joined. EXTRA teams offer a travel soccer experience, but strictly within the AYSO family of teams. We offer one team each for U10 and U12 girls, 2 teams for U10 and U12 boys. Players are coached by a volunteer coach supported by a professional trainer. Practices are once a week with one game typically on Sunday afternoon. Our competitors are EXTRA teams from other AYSO regions, mostly teams from the North Shore. The season includes both fall and spring. Teams are coached and managed in adherence to the AYSO philosophies based on positive coaching, player development, everyone plays, and good sportsmanship.
Northwind is our signature travel club program for those players who want even more soccer in a very competitive environment. Northwind fields teams from U8-U19, with Northwind girls playing IWSL and boys teams playing YSSL. These teams, U9 - U18 boys and girls, play against teams in IWSL (Illinois Women's Soccer League) for girls and for boys. These are among the more competitive leagues in Illinois. Practices are twice a week with one game on the weekends, typically on Sunday but sometimes on Saturday. As with all AYSO teams, these teams adhere to the AYSO philosophies. We have found we can be very successful in these leagues without sacrificing our values.
Tryouts for AYSO travel program are conducted jointly. Players can choose to try out for both clubs or just one of them. In either case, they can only make the roster for one team. If you are interested, we would encourage you to participate in tryouts. Roster sizes and number of teams are limited, so not all players trying out will be offered a position. These teams include the best players from our AYSO families.
