2023 SYA Scholarship Recipients

SYA Scholarships

Each year Smithsburg Youth Athletics awards scholarships to Smithsburg High School Students who have participated in SYA sports.

SYA has two scholarship programs.

The Richard M. Schultz Jr. Memorial scholarship program awards multiple scholarships to Smithsburg High School students who are furthering their education and have been accepted at a college or technical school.  These students must have played sports for SYA, complete the application, have a letter of recommendation, be a graduating Senior at Smithsburg High School, and have demonstrated good character and sportsmanship.

Mr. Schultz created SYA (formally CSL) back in 1976 to give all the youth in the community a chance to play sports.  He created extra teams so that no children would have to be cut from the program.  He was a sports enthusiast and coached a variety of sports teams from youth thru high school.  He had high expectations for his players and pushed them to excel.  He was inducted into the Washington County Sports Hall of fame in 2012.  His son Dirk is a professional golfer and the golf pro at Beaver Creek County Club.

The Amy Everett Memorial scholarship program awards one scholarship to a Smithsburg High School Student who is furthering their education by majoring in either education, mathematics or STEM field of study.   This student must have played sports for SYA, complete the application, be a graduating Senior at Smithsburg High School, have a letter of recommendation, and have demonstrated good character and sportsmanship.  Amy Everett grew up in Washington County graduating from Boonsboro High School in 1985 and Frostburg State University with a degree in mathematics and teaching.  She taught mathematics at Smithsburg High School and was a very active member of the high school and the Smithsburg Community.

The SYA scholarships are funded thru the raffles held and by donations from friends, families and former scholarship recipients. If you would like to make a donation to the scholarship fund you can send a check made out to SYA with scholarship fund in the memo line to P.O. Box 21 Smithsburg MD 21783 or email the board members on the Board of Directors link if you would like to make a donation by credit card.

Thank you to John Dinterman for Sponsoring the Raffle to Raise the Money for 2023 Scholarships!
