Martin Looking Forward to Spring 2020

"I'm looking forward to the Spring this year"
Editorial by U19 Coach and Club President:  Brent Martin

It's been a long time since we've seen each other consistently boys, but I'm looking forward to this Spring!

Obviously we will play some good soccer, but what I'm looking forward to most are the fun times we will have and the friends we will make that will last a lifetime.

It was so much fun this high school season traveling from high school to high school and seeing guys that we all spent weekends with in hotels on the opponents team.  It makes the matches so much more fun, and so much more competitive.  At the end of the day, we are all competitive and we all want to beat each other.  But the sportsmanship we have during the season is so much better when we build these bonds during the "off season".

Our U17 and U19 teams didn't get the results we wanted last season.  And that's okay.  Because I would like to note to everyone that 8 of our U17 team players who only won 1 match during travel went on to play Varsity on their HS team and finished 2nd place in their conference, beating a majority of teams whose players didn't put themselves in the same competitive arena that we did.  So in the end, it paid off.  4 of our U19 players put themselves on that same team, so that was a total of 12 players who played on my HS varsity team that played at the highest level during the off season.  It paid off.

Sometimes it might seem like it's difficult or it's expensive for some of us, but the value of travel soccer and competitive soccer during the Spring is there for all to see.  That effort and that level of play is what makes the high school game so much easier, and it gives us the exposure that we need to that higher level of play to better prepare us to perform at our highest level during the Fall.

I'm on my 2nd Robeson County Coach of the Year award (back-to-back), I've written articles and have been featured in United Soccer Coaches magazine, I've won scholarships to attend coaching clinics, earned my Advanced National Diploma in Florida under United Soccer Coaches, and I've had numerous players win Conference Player of the Year, win All Conference, and All Region Honors.

None of the aforementioned has brought me as much joy as travel soccer has.  The experiences, the travels, the friendships, the bonds, the competition, the soccer complex facilities that we play at.  Being at those highest levels with the most talented players in our region is what brings me the most joy.  And I'm looking forward to that again this Spring.

This year we will only have one U19 team, and I will be coaching.

Tryouts will be this Wednesday, November 20th, on the St Pauls HS Stadium field at 6:30 p.m.

We will only be selecting the BEST 18 players who show up for tryouts to be a part of this team, and it is open to boys born in 2001 or younger.

We are still undecided yet as to whether or not we will play the Tournament/Showcase team or the Classic League play.  That will be solely up to you guys and whatever best suits your finances.  The most important thing to me is that we get the guys of our region the level of recognition they deserve, we put together a quality team of great attitudes and skill, and we go out and put ourselves in the arena that is the most challenging.

It's easy to be a big fish in a small pond, but nobody wants to be that.  What we have to want is more for ourselves, and more of a challenge.

I cannot wait till Wednesday to see players from all the various high schools coming together to create one larger team with a common goal.

If any of you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact me personally.  Those of you that know me know I'm pretty easy to work with and contact.

Best of luck on Wednesday guys, and make sure you get signed up here on the website for tryouts!
