WEATHER SAFETY

Weather changes can do more than delay a game.  Please familiarize yourself with these weather safety tips.

  • The average lightning bolt is 6-8 miles long and the average thunderstorm is 6-10 miles wide and travels at 25mph.
  • Once the leading edge of the storm approaches within 10 miles, you are in danger.
  • On average, thunder can only be heard over a distance of 3-5 miles.  This means that by the time you hear thunder, there is potential danger.
  • If a manager or coach feels threatened by weather, STOP PLAY and move everyone to safety.

WHERE TO GO?

  • Large, enclosed shelters
  • Automobiles with windows rolled up are a good place to seek shelter from lightning.

WHERE NOT TO GO?

  • Avoid isolated trees and picnic shelters
  • Stay away from dugouts, bleachers, fences, light poles, and water

IN THE EVENT OF A TORNADO, TAKE SHELTER IN THE CONCESSION STAND.
