KERRY SMITH

Kerry Smith, a former Women's Premier League player and veteran assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level, was named the head coach of the Washington College women's soccer team in April 2014. In her first season as the Shorewomen's head coach, the team set the school record for fewest goals allowed in a season.

Smith came to Washington College from Temple University, where she served as an assistant coach for the 2013 season, helping lead the program to one of its more successful seasons in recent history during the Owls' first year in the American Athletic Conference. Temple's 4-0 start to the season was its best ever and the Owls' scoring output increased by over 70% from the 2012 season.

Prior to arriving at Temple, Smith spent two seasons each as an assistant coach at Jacksonville State, UMBC, and VMI. As a graduate assistant at Jacksonville State, she coached the team's offense and the Gamecocks' scoring output nearly tripled. With Smith on staff, Jacksonville State went 10-8-2 in 2012, its first winning season in nine years. The Gamecocks were also awarded the NSCAA Academic Team Award and had the highest grade-point average among all Ohio Valley Conference teams.

While at UMBC, Smith worked with the goalkeepers and defense and cut the Retrievers' goals allowed nearly in half. She recruited two America East Conference All-Freshman Team selections, highlighting one of the program's strongest-ever recruiting classes. The Retrievers also received an NSCAA Academic Team Award.

Smith's collegiate coaching start came at VMI, where she helped lead the Keydets to their most successful season ever. After being picked to finish last in the Big South in 2008, the Keydets wound up tied for second in the league, just three points out of first place. During her tenure, VMI made its first two conference tournament appearances and doubled its win total from 2007 to 2008. Smith coached the team's goalkeepers to VMI's lowest goals-against average and most shutouts in program history. She recruited and coached the Virginia State Rookie of the Year, the Big South's leading goal-scorer, and the Big South's Freshman of the Year. VMI also earned the NSCAA's Academic Team Award.

Smith's coaching experience also includes time at the club and Olympic Development Program (ODP) levels with Plantation Eagles Soccer Club in Florida, Freestate Soccer Alliance in Maryland, Fusion Soccer Club in Alabama, and the Alabama Olympic Development Program. In addition, she has worked summer camps at the University of Virginia, Penn State, the University of Maryland, the University of Tennessee, and William & Mary.

A four-year letter-winner at Nova Southeastern University, Smith has played for both Leeds United Ladies and the Doncaster Belles of the Women's Premier League as well as with the Miami Kickers of the Women's Professional Soccer League.

Smith, originally from Leeds, England, earned a B.S. in Business Administration and Marketing from Nova Southeastern in 2006 and went on to complete an M.S. in Emergency Management at Jacksonville State. She holds an NSCAA Advanced National Coaching License and an NSCAA National Goalkeeper License. She is a also a 2009 graduate of the NCAA Women's Coaches Academy.
