PONY to hold first-ever MLB PLAY BALL event

PONY Baseball and Softball is proud to announce that, for the first time, it will hold a collaborative PLAY BALL event with Major League Baseball in celebration of the 2019 DICK’S Sporting Goods Pony League World Series (PLWS). The PLAY BALL event will be held from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. ET/US at Wild Things Park, home of the Washington Wild Things, on Wednesday, Aug. 14.

“We are very excited to host our first PLAY BALL event in conjunction with the 68th Pony League World Series in Washington, Pennsylvania, the home of PONY Baseball,” said Abraham Key, President and CEO. “We are honored to partner with Major League Baseball to showcase the great games of baseball and softball to many tri-state youth, in some cases, for the first time.”

The PLAY BALL initiative is baseball’s collective effort to encourage young people and communities to engage in baseball- or softball-related activities, including formal leagues, special events and casual forms of play. PLAY BALL events have become MLB’s signature youth engagement activity during the professional and amateur baseball and softball calendar, especially on key dates throughout MLB’s Championship Season and through the Postseason & World Series. PLAY BALL events demonstrate the positive way the game can serve as an outlet for physical activity, fun with friends and learning how to play the sport at its most basic levels. PLAY BALL also serves as the League’s youth umbrella in which all associated programs and events derive from the initiative’s consistent, simple message: However You Play Ball, PLAY BALL!

“We are thrilled to partner with PONY for this special activation," said Tony Reagins, Executive Vice President of Baseball & Softball Development, MLB. “For years, PONY has been providing substantive playing opportunities in communities all across the world, and we look forward to reaching even more young people through this special PLAY BALL activation.”

During this 90-minute event, youth ages 4-13 (as of June 1, 2019) will participate in five-to-six different stations consisting of instructional baseball-related activities, such as base running, fielding and hitting, alongside PLWS players, coaches and staff. This is a non-competitive event aimed at teaching youth baseball beginners the basic skills necessary to play the game, all while having fun being physically active. Wild Things Park is located at 1 Washington Federal Way, Washington, PA 15301, next door to PONY Baseball and Softball’s International Headquarters.

It is strongly recommended that interested youth are pre-registered for this event. Parents or guardians may do by going here. The first 300 registrants will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, so register today! No prior baseball or softball experience is required to participate and there is no cost. Participants also do not have to bring any equipment, but can bring a glove, if they would like.

The DICK’S Sporting Goods Pony League World Series will be held at Lew Hays PONY Field in Washington, Aug. 9-15 and feature the top Pony 14U teams from across the globe all vying for the title of international champion.
