Pinto 8U & Mustang 9U International Baseball Classic day one recap


 

A packed house at Cusumano Sports Complex in Mt. Vernon, Illinois witnessed highly competitive action on day one at the 2019 Pinto 8U and Mustang 9U International Baseball Classic yesterday. Teams jockeyed for position to assert themselves to the top of their respective pools in order to advance to Saturday’s knockout round.

Pinto 8U

Three of day one’s 10 games were decided by one run, including the day’s thrilling finale between Manila, Philippines and host Mt. Vernon, Illinois. The Philippines’ Doun Yatco’s game-tying RBI single and Nathhaniel Gregorio’s go-ahead RBI groundout in the top of the sixth gave the squad a lead it didn’t surrender, after Mt. Vernon’s Sledge Hudson led off the inning with a single. In Pool A, Salem, Illinois proved it could contend with the world’s best, as it defeated Panama 10-5 and Indonesia 13-0, respectively. In Pool B, defending International Baseball Classic champion Paradera, Aruba picked up right where it left off from a year ago and finished day one 2-0, defeating West Frankfort, Illinois 12-0 and Mt. Vernon 19-11. Likewise, annual contender Sparta, Illinois finished the day 2-0 with a victories over Manila (14-10) and West Frankfort (10-6).

Mustang 9U

In the Mustang 9U division, the American teams from Illinois won each of their respective games against their international competition. The Mt. Vernon, Illinois Dirt Dawgs, the Marion, Illinois SI Bullets and the Marion Stars & Stripes each picked up victories over the Shanghai, China Force, Manila, Philippines and Aruba, respectively. The day’s finale between the Marion SI Bullets and Aruba was won on a walk-off in extra innings by the Bullets’ Landon Boyd, who singled home Grayson Liefer, who started off the bottom of the seventh with a double. With the 11-10 win, the Bullets finished the day 1-0, while their neighbors, the Marion Stars & Stripes, ended day one 2-0.
