Day 1 Recap at the Palomino European Zone Championships

The second annual Palomino European Zone Championships began today in Stuttgart, Germany, and while, for many of the participating teams, it was some of their first outdoor competitive action of the spring season, the offensive firepower was already in mid-season form.

GM #1: Stuttgart Reds 20  Paris University Club 0 (F/5)

Host Stuttgart, Germany rolled to victory over the defending European Zone Champion Paris University Club in the tournament’s first game 20-0. The Reds broke open the game in the top of the first inning, when they scored eight runs. They would later do the same in the top of the fourth. The top-three hitters in the Reds’ order, Fabian Beck, Fridolin Fink and Moritz van Bergen all recorded multi-hit, mutli-RBI games, as both Fink and van Bergen knocked two doubles each on the day. Stuttgart split the pitching duties between four players, who worked five innings, led by Yannick Witt, who got the win. The staff pitched a shutout on just two hits with seven walks, while striking out six. For Paris, Phillip Bird collected the team’s two hits. The French will look to get off to a better start in the tournament tomorrow against the Poland National Team at 11:30 a.m. Meanwhile, the Germans will battle the Belgium National Team tomorrow evening at 5:30 p.m. local time Stuttgart.

Stats

GM #2: Paderborn Untouchables 15  North State Warriors 1 (F/5)

Equally as impressive offensively as their countrymen from Stuttgart, the Paderborn Untouchables routed the North State Warriors 15-1 in game two. Paderborn exploded for nine runs in the top of the first inning, as it took advantage of three North State errors, while collecting seven hits. Merlin Bendlin led off the game with a double and Zan Primozic followed his hit up with a triple, which sparked the offense. Both hitters finished the game an impressive 7-for-7 with six runs scored and seven RBI, while Bendlin hit a home run. Yannic Walther also was 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. The Warriors scored their only run in the bottom of the fourth, when Alys von Loenen singled, scoring Bas Houtkamp from second. It was a solid pitching performance for Luca Kloppenburg, who tossed the game’s final four innings, after Landislaus Landwehr opened the game and struck out two in an inning’s work. Kloppenburg allowed just one run on three hits and two walks, while striking out eight for the win. Paderborn takes on the Swiss National Team at 2:30 p.m. in its next game tomorrow, while North State hopes to get on track, when it faces Netherlands United at 8:30 a.m. local time Stuttgart.

Stats

GM #3: Netherlands United 6  Swiss National Team 2

The most competitive game of the day witnessed Netherlands United drop the Swiss National Team 6-2 in the third game of day one. The Netherlands scored two runs apiece in their first two frames. Floyd Droog scored Boris De Voos and Lucas Erkeland on his single in the first. Jurre Kamp and De Voos both scored in the second, when Erkeland reached on an error. It was smooth sailing through three innings on the mound for Lucca Van der Schouw, who picked up the win. He didn’t allow a run or a hit, while walking one and striking out four. Mitchel Colina connected on an RBI single, scoring Droog, in the top of the fourth to make it 5-0 Netherlands. Sydney Hoeverts scored on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth to give the team an insurance run. The Swiss National Team didn’t give up and scored two runs on a passed ball and an error, respectively. Ultimately, the Dutch pitching was just too good, as Aidan Brodsjo and J. Langevoord combined to go four innings, allowing two unearned runs on one hit and two walks, while striking out four. Netherlands United take on the North State Warriors at 8:30 a.m. tomorrow. The Swiss National Team will vie for its first win of the tournament against the Paderborn Untouchables at 2:30 p.m. local time Stuttgart.
