Welcome to Fall 2020!!

Good Afternoon,

We hope this email finds everyone well over this hot summer!

We would like to welcome back all returning players and all of our new players.  Five years ago I came up with this crazy idea to start a field hockey league in Bordentown, and Kim didn’t think twice when she decided to jump on the crazy train with me.  We have put in an exceptional amount of work over the last couple years along with some great friends, family and volunteers.  As we enter our 5th year, we are so happy to see how much that work has paid off and how far we have come.

As we know, COVID19 has put a damper on everyone’s plans since March.  We are doing the best we can to make sure our girls get to play this fall.  We ask that you bear with us as we move forward in these crazy times, this is all new to us as well and is a 100% volunteer organization.

Ok, now for the information you need to know…

Our first practice is:

Tuesday, August 25th for Mini’s (K-2nd) (5:30 – 6:15 at the high school)

Tuesday, August 25th for Juniors (3rd-5th) (6:00 – 7:00 at the high school)

Thursday, August 27th for Seniors (6th-8th) (6:00 – 7:30 at the high school)

We understand that a lot of people are on vacation, so not a big deal if your child misses, but please give us a heads up, so that we are aware.

We will be available for questions after the first couple of practices when you come to pick up your children.

Practices will continue at these times every week forward.  Once we get to October we will move back a little bit to accommodate the sun.

First and foremost, this is a Recreational Learning League.  The Burlington League that we play in takes this very seriously.  The idea is to learn as much about the sport of field hockey as possible.  To improve upon one’s own skills and most importantly to have fun while doing it.  Teaching them to love the sport will inspire them to do better, because they want to.

With that said we expect all persons involved (coaches, parents, players, etc.) to be supportive and positive.  Negativity will not be tolerated.  Please remember this a volunteer institution.  Nobody gets paid to be here.  Please be respectful.  Should any issues arise please bring them to my or Kim’s attention immediately.  We do not, let me repeat, do not tolerate any behavior from children, coaches or parents that go against this.  We get it, you want your child to be the next Alesha Widdall or Amy Swensen, but that doesn’t happen overnight and not in this league.   This is your starting point.  Your daughter needs to learn to love the sport before she aspires to do anything else with it.

Preliminary teams have been completed.  We have one mini team, three junior teams and three senior teams.  The Junior group plays with 9 players on the field.  The Senior group plays with 11 players on the field.  We will not release the teams until after the first couple practices and we determine that the teams are balanced.  We do not have an “A” team or “B” team as some leagues will do.  We balance out our talent.  We feel this is better for all involved.  All girls will get equal playing time.  They may not always get to play where they want to.  The idea is to have them learn a number of positions so they can play their preferred position better.  Please note, if your child refuses to play different positions, they will have less playing time.  With that said, we will do our best to accommodate and treat everyone fairly.  If someone feels that this is not happening, please let myself, Kim or a coach know.

Required equipment.

Uniforms – Because of the unprecedented time, we have decided not to provide a shirt this year.  Your child will be asked to wear a black t-shirt or tank top along with black shorts or a black hockey skort.  We will be providing socks.  These are the same socks that we used last year.

No Jewelry -  Absolutely no jewelry is allowed.  Tape on the ears is not acceptable.  Wait till after the season to get new piercings. If your child refuses to remove they will not play.  Anything in the hair must be soft.  No hard plastic or metal.  Remember this is for their safety.  Even a simple hair tie on the wrist can cause a broken finger.

Shin guards - (we suggest the reversible STX black/white shinguards)  They cannot wear soccer shinguards!  They are intended for a soccer ball not a hard field hockey ball.  They will get hurt.

Goggles - Must follow the guidelines in the 2020-21 rule book.  Mini’s and Juniors are required to wear goggles, Seniors are optional.  As the girls get older, the goggles become more dangerous then safe.  Most injuries on the fields are from goggles as the girls get older and more aggressive on the field.

Mouthguard - Cannot be clear.  Any mouthguard will do, but we recommend the Sisu mouth guard, which allows for better breathing and talking during play.  If your child wears braces, please talk with your Orthodontist.  They will usually provide the correct mouthguard for your child.  Your daughter will not play without these.  No exceptions!

Shoes -  The high school does not permit cleats on their turf.  Please either have sneakers or turf shoes.  A number of our games will be on grass.  Cleats or Turf Shoes are suggested, but sneakers are fine too.  I purchased field hockey turf shoes for my daughter and she wears these on both.  You can also purchase soccer turf shoes.

Stick -  If you have any questions on purchasing a stick or need to borrow one, please reach out.

DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD WITH A BALL!! I know this sounds ridiculous, but our turf time is limited and we do not have the time to search for missing balls.  And trust me they always get lost.  The league has plenty.

If you have any questions about equipment please let us know!

COVID19 Field Procedures - Please see COVID19 attachment and COVID-19 Daly Pre-screening Questionnaire attachment.

Practices will be every Tuesday for Mini’s from 5:30 to 6:15, Juniors from 6 to 7:00 and Thursday, Seniors from 6 to 7:30 to start with on the High School Turf.  Please review the practice schedule.  Please make sure that the girls are "ready to play at practice start time" They should not show up at 6 and have to get dressed.  Again, NO cleats allowed on the turf.  Also, NO food allowed on the turf.  Please send plenty of water.

Games will be held at a different Host site each week on Saturday’s and some Friday nights for Juniors and Sunday's for Seniors.  Scheduling can be any time between 9am (10 am on Sunday) and 4pm.  Final schedule should be out a week before our first game.  Please note, we do not have control over the release of the schedule.  Kathy, the head of the Burlington League puts a lot of time and effort to make it happen.  We will get it to you as soon as possible.  We appreciate your anticipated patience with this.

The official schedule will also be kept on the Burlington County site. This site will have the most up-to-date weather information and schedule changes.  This is not our Bordentown site, but rather the Burlington Field Hockey Group we are part of.  Always check here first!  https://www.leaguelineup.com/welcome.asp?url=bcyfhl

Typically, we will also plan a number of team bonding activities throughout the season, however with the current COVID19 situation, we will not be doing these activities this season.

Once our rosters are posted….

If you have a smart phone make sure you download the Dicks Team Manager app so you can get notifications about practices, games and everything else!  This will be the best way to communicate with your coach and your team.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions to myself, Kim, or any of the coaches.

Again, we are looking forward to a fun, exciting, season!!

WELCOME!!
