Majors Divison Overview

Age: 9-11 (Majors)

Objective: The purpose of the Majors program is for players to have fun playing the game of baseball while learning proper fundamentals and playing for a team. Players will participate and learn at a more advanced level that in previous divisions, while introducing moderate competitive aspects of baseball like wins/losses, scoring runs, steals, etc.

Introduction: In the Majors Division, players will build on the basic fundamentals of baseball learning in earlier divisions while being introduced to the more complex, competitive aspects of the game, like wins/losses, pitching, catching, Participants will be hitting kid-pitch, learning foundational rules of the game and understanding more detailed aspects of each position in the field. Parent/players can expect 1-2 games, and possibly one practice, per week over the course of the regular season. The Majors division participates in 9U, 10U and 11U District-wide All-Star programs after June 15th.

PLAYER EVALUATIONS: Players are evaluated for the purpose of helping the VP and Coaches balance teams. Teams will comprise of no more than twelve players. After player evaluations, the Majors VP and Coaches will meet to establish teams. Head Coaches will then notify parents with rosters and schedules.

UNIFORMS: Caln Little League will provide jersey shirts, colored socks and hats. Parents can expect to purchase a baseball glove/mitt, a bat, white pants and rubber baseball spikes. Protective cups are required in the Majors division. Batting helmets are provided, but parents are welcome to provide their son with a Little League approved helmet.

BATS: Bats must be approved for little league play. Please check with the Division VP or Head Coach - or access the approved bat list on Little League International web page for each year. Bats for little league play may be no larger than 2 5/8” barrels and made from aluminum alloy, composite or wood and must have the USA Baseball logo visible on the bat.

FIELDS: Practices and games will be played at the fields located behind the Caln Elementary School, along with Scott Field in Coatesville. On occasion, games may also be played on the softball field located next to the main snack bar facility. Click here to view field layout.

What is expected from Players?

  • Players will learn the basics of pitching, hitting, throwing and fielding.
  • Players will learn the ready step, prepared to field the ball, learning what to do if the ball is hit to them
  • Players will learn how to be coached and to be a member of a team.
  • Players will learn by practicing drills, throwing around the bases, hitting off the "tee", fielding ground balls and pop-ups with cut-offs.
  • Players will learn to hit soft toss, front toss, coach pitch and kid pitch.
  • Players will develop hand-eye coordination and bat swing-techniques without the fear of being hit by a pitched ball.
  • Players will develop an awareness of fielding positions.
  • Players will learn to catch fly balls.
  • Players will develop throwing overhand with proper mechanics, building arm strength and accuracy.


What is expected from Volunteers & Coaches?

  • Parents need to complete a criminal background check and state child abuse certification by Mid-March. There is no cost for the background check and child abuse certification.
  • Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches should learn how to run a good practice with drills.
  • Parents on the field of play working with children, must have completed a criminal background check and child abuse clearance.
  • Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches will be given a roster of players with contact information.
  • All player information is confidential and not to be given out to anyone or used for any other purpose than to afford team practices and games.


GAME RULES: The Official Little League Rule Book will be used for the Caln LL programs, unless superseded by one of the following special Caln Little League Rules:

  • We have adopted a continuous batting order (rule 4.04).
  • Each half inning is completed after three outs have occurred, or 5 runs have been scored, whichever comes first.
  • Pitchers must follow Little League published pitch count limits. (9-10 year olds, 75 pitches per day and 11 year olds 85 pitcher per day), with a minimum three days off before being allowed to pitch again.  More information on Little League Pitch Count rule can be found here.


Pre-Game Preparation & Cleanup

Both teams are in charge of field set-up, which is to include:

  • Layout of foul lines and batter's box;
  • Raking of base paths, batter's box, skin infield areas and pitchers mound;
  • Placing of bases and removal of them at the conclusion of the game;
  • Each team is to supply one (1) game baseball;
  • Raking the field after the conclusion of the game;
  • Ensuring all trash is removed from the benches and placed in the proper containers.
  • In case of inclement weather during the day, both Head Coaches should be at the field early to prep it for the game.


General Guidelines

  • It is expected that all players receive equal playing time during all regular season games.
  • Regular games will consist of 6 full innings.
  • There is a 2-hour limit for regular season games.
  • Evenings games should be called at dusk when visibility creates a hazardous situation.
  • Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches must be properly attired with Team Baseball Hat, League issued or matching team shirt, pants/shorts, baseball shoes with rubbers spikes (metal cleats not permitted)/sneakers. Cutoffs and sleeveless shirts are not permitted.
  • Both Head Coaches at the field decide rain-outs, unless preceding by a League wide decision. Every effort should be made to get the game in. Decisions should be made at the field unless a downpour is occurring.
  • Makeup games must be scheduled through the League VP.


Equipment & Uniforms

  • A Head Coach/team may not assess players a fee, or request payment for, any uniforms including, special hat, shirts, socks, etc., or equipment such as bats, helmets, etc., without expressed permission of the Board of Directors.
  • Player's names are not permitted on the back of the uniform shirt.
  • Only uniforms supplied by the League are permitted.
  • Uniforms should not be worn in travel ball outside Caln LL.
  • All equipment must meet Little League, Inc. safety requirements.

  
Batting:

  • The league will institute a continues batting order, meaning that all players will bat in the lineup. (i.e. 1 through 12)   
  • Bunting will be allowed. 

 

 Fielding Requirements:

  • Unlimited player substitution for games. Only for the pitchers and catchers per the rules stated below are restricted. Also, once a pitcher leaves the game from the mound he cannot return to the mound even if he stays in the field.  
  • No players is allow to be on the bench for more than two (2) innings total for the entire game during regular season play.  Also, a player cannot sit on the bench for more than two (2) consecutive innings unless he is injured or unable to play.  

 

Stealing Requirements:

  • 5 steal limit per inning for the first eight games of the season.  This includes one successful steal of home per that inning. Between games 6 and 12 (Caln Challenge Seeding Games) unlimited steals will be permitted except for home plate; only one successful steal of home per inning. 
  • Catchers throw back to the mound between pitches is considered dead.  Runners may not advance.

 
Scoring Requirements:

  • There will be a five (5) run rule in effect for each inning. 
  • The ten run rule will be effect after the fourth inning is completed (i.e. at the conclusion of the top of the fourth inning if the home team is winning or at the conclusion of the bottom of the fourth inning if visiting team is winning). 


Pitching Requirements:

  • Any player on a regular season team may pitch. Exception: Any player who has played the position of catcher in four (4) innings or more in a game is not eligible to pitch on that calendar day.  Note: the catcher receiving one pitch to a batter in the fourth inning constitutes having caught four (4) innings.
  • A player in the Majors Division cannot throw more than 90 pitches per day (9-10 year olds is a maximum of 75 pitches per day; 11 year olds are a maximum of 85 pitcher per day); standard rest days must be observed as indicated below.  The exception is if a pitcher reaches the limit imposed in Regulations VI (c ) for his / her league age while facing a batter, the pitcher may continue to pitch until any one of the following conditions occurs:
    • The batter reaches base.
    • The batter is put out.
    • The third out is made to complete the half-inning.


NOTE: A pitcher who delivers 41 or more pitches in a game cannot play the position of catcher for the reminder of that day.  Additionally, no pitcher may pitch three days in a row, regardless of the number of day to day pitches thrown.

  •  Pitchers Rest Requirements:
    • If a player pitches 66 or more pitches in a day, four (4) calendar days of rest must be observed.  
    • If a player pitches 51-65 pitches in a day, three (3) calendar days of rest must be observed
    • If a player pitches 36-50 pitches in a day, two (2) calendar days of rest must be observed
    • If a player pitches 21-35 pitches in a day, one (1) calendar day of rest must be observed. 
    • If a player pitches 1-20 pitches in a day, no (0) calendar day of rest must be observed.
    • NO PITCHER MAY THROW THREE (3) CONSECUTIVE DAYS IN A ROW REGARDLESS OF NUMBER OF PITCHES THROWN


NOTE: If a pitcher reaches a day(s) of rest threshold while facing a batter, the pitcher may continue to pitch until any one of the following conditions occur, (1) the batter reaches base, (2) the batter is retired, (3) the third out is made to complete the half inning or the game.  The pitcher will only be required to observe the calendar day (s) of rest for the threshold he / she reached during that at-bat, provided that pitcher is removed or the game is completed before delivering a pitch to another batter.

Stealing 

  • When a player steals second and the catcher attempts to throw him out, and the ball makes it to the outfield, the ball is dead and the runner may not advance.  
 

Scoring

  • The six inning of every game is unlimited runs.   

 

Game Time Limit

  • No new innings may start after an 1 hr 45 min.  If the game time is met before the six inning, it must be decided between the two (2) head coaches if unlimited runs will be allow in that inning prior to the start of that inning and confirmed by the umpire. The goal is not to have a game last longer than 2 hrs.


Game Cancelations

  • The home team head coach makes the call of the game prior to the start of the game.  Any game that is being canceled due to weather must be reviewed with the VP of Majors prior to making the call.  Once the finalized decision is made between the home team coach and the VP of Minor A then the visitor coach and umpire must be notified by the home team coach that game is canceled.

All-Star Selection Process

At the end of the regular season, which corresponds with Little League International's calendar, each eligible baseball and softball division has the opportunity to participate in the District 28 and Little League International sponsored All-Star tournaments. Players must be invited by their respective division VP or Head Coaches to participate in the All-Star program.

The division VP will convene a head coaches-only meeting whereby they will nominate their players and vote for who makes the All-Star team.  Head Coaches cannot vote for their own players. The players receiving the most votes are ranked and then selected.  If a player does not want to participate in All-Stars, they should inform their Head Coach immediately following the invitation to participate.  If a player declines to participate, the next player in rank order will be invited. The Little League President will choose the All-Star managers. Either the Little League president or Sr. Player Agent must be present at the time of team selection tom be official.
