About Coach Casey

A Mountain Girl...
Growing up at the base of Mt. Hood in Oregon, I have a love for the outdoors, being active and staying healthy.  I am the eighth of nine children and although I loved to play dress-up, I didn't mind getting dirty on the soccer field or getting knocked down as a catcher. I started playing competitive sports at the age of five and was immediately hooked, with volleyball emerging as my passion (even through I was only 5 foot!).  As a high school student, while playing volleyball, softball and ski racing, I also enjoyed coaching youth sports.

College...
I attended St. Mary's College of California where I received my Bachelors in Kinesiology with a teaching and coaching emphasis, hoping to help children lead healthy and active lives, while potentially finding their passion, as I did.  As a student, I worked as an instructor at a children's fitness center, while also volunteering as a coach for an after-school program.  I also took two trips to the Dominican Republic as a missionary intern where I taught middle and high school health and recreation and coached sports programs after school and in the summer.  Additionally, at SMC, I helped start a competitive club volleyball team, traveling throughout California as the team's Defensive Specialist/Libero.

Staying active...
After graduating, I continued playing volleyball in an adult league and started a new activity... Running!  My first ever race was a full marathon fundraiser... 26.2 miles... in 100 degree weather... Crazy!  Since then, I have participated in several running fundraisers from 5Ks to half marathons.  Additionally, I entered into the world of tri-athletes and completed a two-month, 36,000 mile cross-country bike ride fundraiser.  No, not motorcycles, and yes, I would do it again!

Career...
After graduating from SMC, I joined the Lasallian Volunteers program where I was placed in Rhode Island as a counselor for at-risk youth and their families.  During my years as a counselor, I started an after-school program and a group recreational therapy and nutrition education program.  I organized several run/walk fundraisers for staff and clients and was known as the "go-to" for health tips around the office.  After five years in Rhode Island, I decided that I wanted to focus my career on helping people, especially kids and families, lead happier, healthier, more active lives.  I decided to move to New York City where I started my path to becoming a health counselor and coach.  I worked for a low-income middle school teaching advisory periods focusing on healthy choices and ran a family cook night, preparing meals with families and educating them on the benefits of cooking healthy meals for their loved ones.  Additionally, I started coaching for a half-marathon fundraising program where the majority of participants were adults embarking on their first ever running or walking event. As the run coach, I developed the training programs, ran training sessions twice a week, ran clinics, and provided weekly informational emails and support, and was on course with each athlete on race day.  What a blast!  I have coached four half marathon teams which has turly been inspirational. I am also a graduate of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, becoming a board certified health practitioner, accredited through the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP).  As a Holistic Health and Wellness Counselor, I work with individuals who truly want to start living healthier and happier.

Now based in California, I'm happy to be following my passion working with kids and sports with my own youth volleyball program and coaching at both the club and high school varsity level. In addition, running the team sports program at WISH Charter and working with a variety of kids and sports, has been nothing short of a blast!

Me...
I have lived both on the west and east coast and have visited 30 of the US states, 5 countries and 4 continents.  I love to travel and meet new people and experience new cultures.  My best memories include my cross country bike ride, skydiving in Hawaii and riding an elephant through the jungle in Thailand.  I love adventures!  My dream is to someday be a participant on the Amazing Race... Anyone want to be my partner??
