Rush Core Values Series: The Importance of SAFETY

The Rush Core Values are an integral part of the foundation of the Rush Way. Each month, various perspectives from National Technical Directors, Coaching Directors,  coaches and players will help provide additional insight into what makes each of the 11 Core Values so important to the heartbeat of each Rush Soccer club around the world.

This month, Director of Coaching Education Matt Saul expands on the core value of Safety in his own words,

“This is the most important Core Value within Rush in my opinion. As Directors and Coaches, we aspire to create an environment where coaches, parents, and players can have the most enjoyable experience possible. An environment that supports the development of character, the electricity of competition and the importance of pure enjoyment. I believe that at the heart of the creation of this environment is safety.”

Saul continued, “Safety is not just physical safety (i.e. ensuring goals are anchored, facilities safe, and injury prevention). While these are of great importance, we must consider the emotional safety of the people we interact with everyday in training and games. As coaches are you predictable for your players? Does your personality change based on the result of a game, or do you provide a consistent and predictable environment that encourages players to take risks and learn--with your guidance--from the moments in the game? Similar questions can be asked of Coach Developers. Do you provide a safe, open and supportive environment for your coaches to grow? Are you approachable and consistent with your expectations? Do players and coaches develop because or in spite of your influence?

The impact of players or coaches feeling unsafe, undervalued or under-supported is tremendous. Not only is it proven to negatively impact skill acquisition and development, it also leads to the individual shutting down their creativity and ability to become problem solvers.

As coaches we constantly strive to ensure players are safe, and we do this to ensure they feel a part of something special, this then allows us to challenge the player to maximize their opportunity to reach their individual potential.”

The Core Value of safety is essential to Rush, and extends to our environment, our offices, travel, the field, and our bodies. By prioritizing physical and emotional safety, we seek to be comforted and encouraged within the club by a display of self-control and kindness to and from our staff, coaches and players.
