Q: Who runs Tyngsboro Youth Football and Cheerleading (TYFC)?

A:   TYFC is run by a Board of Directors which is made up exclusively of volunteers.  Our Board consists of an Executive Board of seven people with an extended Board of an additional 5 people.  In addition to the Board of Directors, our parent members are instrumental in assisting with all of the tasks required to make our programs be highly successful for our children participants.   


Q: What are the goals of TYFC?

A:   Our goal is to offer children (regardless of race, creed, religion, or national origin) the opportunity to participate in and attain personal growth through the sport of competitive youth football and cheerleading. To accomplish that, we teach and promote the ideals of teamwork, integrity, sportsmanship, and the importance of academic achievement.


Q: What Conference is TYFC part of?

A:   TYFC is part of the Central Massachusetts Youth Football and Cheerleading Conference (CMYFCC), which is a American Youth Football & Cheerleading (AYF & AYC) conference.


Q: Are there parent volunteer requirements?

A:   As an organization driven by volunteers, we expect that each athlete’s parent/guardian to volunteer at least once per season with a variety of tasks throughout the year to choose from.


Q: Are there required fundraisers?

A:   TYFC athletes participate in one fundraiser per season to help keep our costs low for our families.  Should teams advance to National competitions, additional fundraising opportunities will be available to help reduce the costs of travel and competing.



Q: When is registration?

A:   Registration for the Fall season normally happens in early to mid-April, but may happen as early as March.


Q: How do I register?

A:   Some of our programs require our participants to register on a specific site as the information is required by our Conference and National associations.  Other programs, like combines and off-season events do not have this requirement.  In general, you can register:

Q: Why do we have to register so early?

A:   We cannot plan out teams, assess equipment needs and focus our efforts until we know how many people we will have at each age group for the season.  Unless people are registered by the middle of June, it is almost impossible for us to:

  • Plan our team structure (coaches) and focus efforts on teams that need more numbers.
  • Have helmets reconditioned based on the sizes that we expect for each player signed up.  The cost of reconditioning often doubles if we wait until the summer to do them.
  • Have game jerseys and pants in stock.  Again, the cost of buying these items as practice starts is significantly more than what it costs us if we are able to buy them now (and a lot less stressful).


Tackle Football Season Info

Q: When does the season start?

A:   Our season can start no earlier than the 4th Monday in July and no later than the 1st Monday in August.  Most teams start that first Monday in August.


Q: When does the season end?

A:   The regular season typically ends in middle of October with playoffs potentially going into November.


Q: How are teams organized?

A:   Tackle football teams are currently grade-based.


Q:  Can my child play in a grade above their own grade? (Playing up)

A:   If two consecutive grades do not have enough players to field individual teams (minimum 16 players), then we may look to have those two grades combined with the players in the younger grade playing up.


Q:  Can my child play in a grade below their own grade? (Playing down)

A:   No.  Players cannot play on a team at a grade level lower than their school grade.


Q: When are games and where are they played?

A:   Games typically happen on Sunday’s, although some games are moved to different days to accommodate long weekends or other activities.  Home games are played at Tyngsboro High School.


Q: When and how often are practices?

A:   Practices occur in the early evening 2-4 times per week, depending on the coach’s preference.  Practices are typically 90-120 minutes in duration.  Practices are held at Tyngsboro Elementary School or at Tyngsboro High School.


Cheerleading Info

Q: How long is the fall cheerleading season?

A:   The TYFC fall cheer season begins first week of August and depending on the outcome of competitions, can last through mid-December. TYFC also offers a winter cheerleading program.


Q: What divisions does TYC cheerleading offer?

A:   TYFC offers cheerleading instruction for athletes ages 5 through 18 (age as of July 31st). There are no try-outs and experience is not required. Everyone is welcome to participate! Team assignments are sent out in July. Cheerleaders are assigned to squads based on several factors, including age. There is no guarantee that your child will be placed on the same team as their friends or siblings, or with a specific coach or team. Teams compete at novice (white), intermediate (red) and advanced (blue) levels, as determined by the Head Coach.


Q: When/where are practices?

A:   Fall practices for competitive teams are held four times per week in August, dropping to three days per week when school begins. Exhibition teams will practice three days per week in August, dropping to two days per week when school begins. Practices are mandatory, and attendance at all games and competitions is required. Please see our attendance policy for more information. Fall season practices are held in the Tyngsboro Elementary School gym.


Q: Does TYC sideline cheer for a sport?

A:   Yes! In addition to competition, our cheerleaders support the TYFC football teams. If a football team advances into the playoffs, squads will be assigned to sideline cheer for those games as well.


Q: How many competitions does TYC participate in?

A:   Fall season competitions include Fun Comp in September, Locals in October, States and Regionals in November and Nationals in December. State, Regional and National events are dependent upon outcome of prior competitions (please note that TYFC sends 1st-3rd place regional placements to Nationals). Exhibition teams attend only Fun Comp and Locals.


Q: What should cheerleaders wear to practice?

A:   To avoid safety issues, proper attire is required for cheerleading. Please review the TYFC cheer dress code for more information.


Q: What is covered in the cheerleading registration fee?

A:   Registration fees for TYC cheerleading cover: at least 3 months of instruction with developed cheer curriculum, coach certifications including CPR/First Aid, Concussion and ASEP Spirit Coach training, coach clinics for stunt and tumble technique/safety training, facility use, mats & equipment including in-house tumbling gear, competition & event fees, competition music, insurance, end of season banquet & gift, optional conditioning clinic in July. TYFC athletes do participate in one fundraiser per season. Should teams advance to Nationals, additional fundraising opportunities will be available to help reduce travel costs.


Flag Football Season Info

Q: When are games and where are they played?

A:   Games happen on Sunday mornings, although games are not played during Labor Day and Columbus Day weekends.  All games are played at Tyngsboro High School and they last no more than 60 minutes.


Q: When and how often are practices?

A:   Practices are limited to no more than 2 per week (90-minute max).  Practices are held at Tyngsboro Elementary School.


Q: How are the teams chosen?

A:  Teams are chosen by TYFC with the intent of having the games be close and fun.  We do our best to have the teams be even across the age groups.  If there are multiple players from the same family in a particular age group, then we keep those players on the same team (unless otherwise requested by the family to not do so).



Q: What equipment does TYFC provide for Tackle Football?

A:  TYFC provides helmets, shoulder pads, game pants, game jersey, practice jersey


Q: What equipment do I need to provide for Tackle Football?

A:   Player provides cleats, mouth guard, padded practice pants (must have knee, thigh, hip, and tailbone pads), and socks.  Athletic cups are optional and would be provided by the player.


Q: What equipment do I need for Cheer?

A:   Cheerleaders will need to purchase short & shell uniform (yours to keep, sell, swap when the season ends). White cheerleading sneakers are required (flat heel, laces, no high tops- we are happy to make recommendations). TYFC & sponsors provide bow and team t-shirt. Athletes will need to attend a uniform fitting session in June/July.


Q: What equipment does TYFC provide for Flag Football?

A:  TYFC provides game jersey and flags.


Q: What equipment do I need to provide for Flag Football?

A:   Player provides provide mouth guard, shorts (no pockets) and shoes.



Q: Do I need a background check if I’m just helping out every once in a while?

A:   Yes. Anyone who will have contact with kids on the field, practice field or team meetings (except if this person is doing chains or play counts) needs to get a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check. This includes parent helpers, team parents, coaches and assistant coaches. The safety of our children is our most important objective.  The process is not difficult and is done at no charge.


Q: I would like to coach.  How do I get started?

A:  TYFC provides guidance to new coaches, so prior experience is not a requirement. Please reach out to our Football or Cheerleading Directors with interest.
