The Saint Joseph Athletic Association has recommended that ALL Saint Joseph Parish student-athletes be afforded the opportunity to play on the appropriate athletic team that corresponds with their individual skill level. This policy applies to the basketball program and is equally applied to both male and female athletes.

The parameters for such an occurrence to take place (all of which must be satisfied) are as follows:

For the purposes of the application of the policy below, the term "Natural Grade Level" is defined as the following:

3rd and 4th Grade - Novice Level
5th and 6th Grade - JV and Intermediate 2 Levels
7th and 8th Grade - Varsity and Intermediate 1 Levels

Supports the mission statement established by both Saint Joseph Catholic Church and the Catholic Youth Organization:

  • Parish Mission Statement – “Like our Patron, Saint Joseph, the Husband of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we are called to foster the presence of Christ in all that we say and do. Our mission is to grow disciples for the Lord Jesus Christ.”
  • As stated in Article III, Section 1 of the Saint Joseph Athletic Association Bylaws, “According to the policies of the Diocese of Harrisburg, the CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) parish-based basketball (or other sports) program, exists to provide opportunities for youth to grow in faith and understanding of the Catholic Church through involvement in parish and diocesan life.”

A Complete Independent Evaluation:

  • All evaluations will be conducted by independent evaluators (Quantity and Individuals to be selected by the SJAA Board) and are final.
  • Any parent(s) that lobbies the Saint Joseph Athletic Association board members, coaches and assistants, parish staff, evaluators or clergy for a specific child to be advanced will have their child (or children) removed from future consideration for participating at a more advanced level of athletic competition.
  • In order to ensure as much objectivity as possible, no athletes will be identified by either name or grade level during the evaluation process and no parents will be allowed to enter the gym on the day of evaluations except those necessary as approved by the SJAA Board.
  • Younger athletes seeking to play at a competitive level (Junior Varsity or Varsity) in an age group above their natural grade level will be evaluated with and against that level of competition. ONLY those whose skill level places them among the top six overall, as determined by the independent evaluators only, will be considered to play at a more advanced level of athletic competition. Athletes playing above their natural grade level may

not be dual rostered on both a Competitive and an Intermediate team.

  • Instructional level players (Novice and Intermediate) may be offered to play outside of their natural age group at another Instructional level if numbers allow for it, but will be based on the recommendations of evaluators. These players may not be dual rostered.

Parental Consent:

  • Parent(s) whose children meet the above criteria will meet with coaches to determine whether their child will advance to the next level. They must fully agree with the decision to allow their child (or children) to participate at a more advanced level of athletic competition. This would apply to any player that is playing outside of the player's natural grade level.
