Bronco 12U: Horsham Banshee's 8 Virginia Glory 7 (F/9)

In the Bronco 12U Championship Game, in what was a back-and-forth game all afternoon long, down a run with one out in the ninth inning, the Banshee's Genevieve Ebaugh scored Megan Kummery on a double to centerfield, tying the game at seven apiece. The next batter, Madison Seidel, proved to be the hero by poking a ground ball through the right side to score Ebaugh to win the game 8-7 in extra innings.

Three different lead changes and one tie led to a 6-6 game going into extra innings. The Banshee's almost ended it in the eighth inning, when, with a runner on third base, Kummery hit a bullet to center field, but Glory center fielder Christina Willemsen made the catch of the day to prolong the game. With momentum on their side, the Glory scored the go-ahead run on a Haley Greer single to left field and advanced Alyssa Sternbeck to third base, but two consecutive outs ended the inning in what was the Glory's last chance at adding to their lead.

The Banshee's started off the scoring in the bottom of the first, when third baseman Sophia Peterson crushed her first of two home runs on the day to give her team an early 2-0 advantage. The Glory got a run back in the top of second inning, when Banshee's pitcher Seidel walked the bases loaded and then walked Olivia Iannizzi to score Daria Haynie.

The Glory added on and took the lead 4-2 in the top of the third when right fielder Natalie Elias reached on a Ebaugh error, scoring Karlee Hughes and Karley Beltran, and then Sternbeck brought home Elias on a single to center field. The lead would be short lived, as Peterson's second home run, this time a three-run shot, made it 5-4 Banshee's, after three complete innings.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Banshee's tacked on a very important run when Seidel singled home Kummery, but the Glory still had fight left. In the top of the fifth inning, Haley Greer reached on an error, which scored Elias, but Sternbeck was caught trying to take third base, and then a double play ended what could have been a big inning for the Glory.

It was then that the Glory turned to relief pitcher Maddie Edwards, who ended up providing 4.1 innings of quality relief, only allowing one earned run on two hits, while striking out one and walking one. Edwards silenced the Banshee's bats until the final inning.

Ebaugh picked up the win and pitched arguably as well in relief as Edwards, going 3.2 innings, striking out three, while not allowing a run on five hits.

Pony 14U: Horsham Banshee's 6 Fort Royal, Virginia Fire 2

A four-run, top of the third inning proved to be all the offense Horsham needed, and its solid defense caused Fort Royal to strand 11 runners on base, as the Banshee's claimed the PONY East Zone Girls Softball Nationals Pony 14U championship 6-2 over the Fire.

Fort Royal's left fielder Alyssa Hoggatt broke open the scoring in the bottom of the first inning when her double scored center fielder Taylor Bowers to make it 1-0. After leaving runners stranded on base in the first two-consecutive innings, the Banshee's finally broke through in the third inning, when it looked as if the squad was going to squander another opportunity. During Kylee Guerrera's at-bat, with two outs, Banshee's center fielder Sam Nuneviller scored on a wild pitch from third base to tie the game at one. After Guerrera walked, right fielder Korynn Bischoff knocked a bases-clearing triple into right field to give her team a 3-1 lead. Short stop Hannah Reimel's single scored Bischoff, and the Banshee's ended their two-out rally with a 4-1 lead.

The Fire had a chance to make a comeback in the bottom of the fourth inning, when a single, walk and a Banshee's error resulted in a Hannah Ruffner run scored to make it 4-2. Unfortunately for Fort Royal, a strike out, pop out and ground out left two runners stranded in scoring position.

Mary Picozzi then relieved Banshee's starter Kylie Woloshyn, after she went four strong innings, allowing two runs, one earned on five hits, while striking out one and walking two. Picozzi followed her teammate counterpart by finishing the final three innings without allowing a run, on one hit with a strikeout and two walks.

Horsham added on two runs for good measure in the top of the seventh, when a Fire error off a batted ball by Reimel scored Guerrera from second base, and Taylor Nelson's single to right field scored Reimel.

Nine different Banshee's recorded hits on the day and five different batters scored runs, while three had multi-hit days. Woloshyn picked up the win for her efforts.

Colt 16U: Buffalo, New York Inferno 2 Franklin, Connecticut Bombers (Teal) 1

Considering the Franklin, Connecticut Bombers (Teal) were coming off a semifinal contest in which they won a 1-0 defensive struggle over the Ashburn, Virginia Shooting Stars and the Buffalo, New York Inferno were throwing their ace, McKenzie Suto, fans at Philip A. Bolen Park in Leesburg, Virginia were expecting another thrilling, close contest. The Colt 16U Championship Game of the PONY East Zone Girls Softball Nationals lived up to expectations, until the Inferno broke through in the third inning.

Designated hitter Syd Mackintosh began the inning with a leadoff walk and moved up to second on a Cara Leone groundout. Second baseman Syd Belicki singled, advancing Mackintosh to third and short stop Iris Kahris came through with a double to centerfield that scored both Mackintosh and Belicki. Both runs were pivotal in Buffalo’s quest for a title.

Throughout the remaining three and a half innings, Franklin’s inability to cash in with runners in scoring position marred its chances to win the game. In the top of the fourth inning, Suto was able to escape trouble, after the Bombers’ first two hitters of the inning reached base, by sending the next three down in order.

After turning to Maria Hanchuk, who pitched a complete game shutout with 11 strikeouts in the semifinals, going into the fourth inning, the Bombers completely shut down the Inferno offense. Hanchuk finished the game going 3.2 innings with six strikeouts and two walks, while allowing just one hit. Momentum seemed to swing Franklin’s way in the top of the fifth inning, when Lindsay Curto scored on a passed ball and Maya Waldron advanced to third base, but Suto struck out Shea Vignone to end the threat.

In the top of the sixth inning, in a downpour, the Bombers looked to strike again, as Kelsie LaHouse walked with one out and Kacie Shea singled, and then both runners advanced a base on an Abbe Minor fielder’s choice. Unfortunately for the Bombers, the Inferno’s Valerie Wales came up with her first of two amazing catches in left field that saved the day for the Inferno.

With two outs more to spare, down a run in the top of the seventh inning, the Bombers bench thought they tied the game when Shea Gendron crushed a ball to deep left field, but Wales’ second sensational catch and Hanchuk’s groundout ended the game 2-1 Inferno.

Suto earned the win after pitching a complete game and allowing just a run (unearned) on six hits, while striking out four and walking two.

Palomino 18U: East Bridgewater, Massachusetts Drifters 12 Sugarloaf, Pennsylvania Stripes & Strikes 2 (F/5)

Contrasting the Colt 16U Championship Game, offense was the name of the game in the Palomino 18U title match. The East Bridgewater, Massachusetts Drifters jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning against the Sugarloaf, Pennsylvania Stripes & Strikes and never relented, resulting in a 12-2 10-run-rule victory to win the championship.

In that first inning, starting off, the Drifters’ Cassie Graca doubled to center field and Jackie Gavin brought her home on her double to left to make it 1-0. After a walk and a fielder’s choice, Sophie Halverson crushed a ball to left center for a double, scoring Gavin and Emily Critch, but resulting in Liv Labbe getting caught going home. After a ground out, River Glenn doubled to center field, scoring Halverson, and Glenn scored on an error during Clara DeCarvalho’s single.

The Stripes & Strikes battled back in the top of the second inning, as Hope Kinney singled, Celine Podlesney singled and Alyssa Stover brought Kinney home on her single to right field, while moving Podlesney to third base. Two outs later, Josie Dershem doubled to center field to score Podlesney and advance Kinney to third, but Drifters’ starter Kyleigh O’Donnell got Marissa Trivelpiece to ground out and end the inning at 5-2 Drifters.

East Bridgewater added to its lead in the bottom of the third inning, when Emily Critch led off the inning with a double and Labbe brought her home on a single to center.

The game got away from the Stripes & Strikes in the bottom of the fourth inning, as Courtney Fisher began the inning with a double, Elizabeth D’Agostino walked and Julia Vaillancourt picked up an RBI on a ground ball single to the left side. After Graca walked, Gavin singled, scoring both D’Agostino and Vaillancourt to make it 9-2. Following a line out and a walk to Labbe, Stripes & Strikes starter Podlesney was pulled.

Halverson continued to crush the ball, recording yet another hit and scoring Graca. Then O’Donnell reached on an error, which scored Gavin and advanced the Drifters’ runners each a base. With a 10-run rule victory in sight, Glenn hit a weak ground ball down to first base, Podlesney stepped on first for the out and gunned the ball home, but Labbe’s speed was good enough to score and win the game for East Bridgewater 12-2.

Collecting the win in the shortened game was Courtney Fisher, who, in just seven pitches, picked up three outs and allowed one hit. She relieved O’Donnell, who pitched well to start the game, going three innings and striking out two, but allowing two earned runs on five hits and walking one.

Leading the offensive charge for the Drifters were Gavin and Halverson, who both recorded two hits and three RBI on the day, while Stover was two-for-two with an RBI for the Stripes & Strikes.

PONY West Zone Girls Softball World Series 2017

Dates: July 26-30
Location: Hemet, California

It was a sensational time at the PONY West Zone Girls Softball World Series in Hemet, California, as 43 teams across five age divisions participated in 115 games at Diamond Valley Lake Park. After five days of battling the competition and the 100 degree heat, five championship-winning teams rose above the rest of the field to earn the title of PONY Girls Softball West Zone champions.

Pinto 8U Championship: Indio, California 4 Redlands, California 3

Down a run in the top of the sixth inning, Indio, California had one final at-bat to pull off the comeback in the Pinto 8U championship game of the PONY West Zone Girls Softball World Series. Thanks to two clutch hits by Belinda Rivera and Mellani Tamayo and three strikeouts, defensively, in the bottom of the sixth, Indio was able to obtain victory from the jaws of defeat 4-3.

Indio struck first in the top of the first inning, when Valeria Balbuena was hit by a pitch and came around to score on a Melanie Vasquez single, as Redlands threw the ball around. But Redlands struck back in the bottom of the second inning thanks to a Jadah Norby inside-the-park home run, which tied the game. Camrynn Culp then singled, she was advanced to second on an error and then to third on Addison King's single during the next at-bat. Culp then scored on another Redlands error, making it 2-1, and Redlands would later get another run in the bottom of the third.

In the top of the fourth, three-straight errors led to an Indio run, but that was all the squad could get in the inning. The team also squandered another opportunity in the top of the fifth, when the bases were loaded with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the scoring threat.

It was then in the top of the sixth that Indio turned on the "on switch," as the team was facing defeat if it could not score a run. Balbuena led off the inning with a single and was scored on Rivera's triple to left field, tying the game at three. With the go-ahead run on third base, Tamayo knocked a double into left to give her team a 4-3 lead.

Unfortunately for Redlands, three-consecutive strikeouts in the bottom of the sixth inning ended the game.

Mustang 10U Championship: Moreno Valley, California 9 Coachella, California 4

After building a 9-2 lead after the first two innings and getting out of three jams defensively in the middle innings of the game, Moreno Valley, California was able to outlast Coachella, California and win a title (9-4) in the Mustang 10U championship game at the PONY West Zone Girls Softball World Series.

The Coachella bats were hot to start out the game, as the first three hitters in the top of the first all singled to give their team a 2-0 lead. Moreno Valley did its damage with two outs in the bottom of the first. With runners on the corners, Madison Barrios hit a pop fly and reached on an error, which scored Imani Shannon. Another error loaded the bases, and Lucero Robles knocked in Judith Carbajal to tie the game at two. Ezebelle Ward broke the game open and gave her team a lead on the next at-bat, as she hit a bases-clearing triple, ending the scoring for the inning (5-2 Moreno Valley).

Moreno Valley added on in the bottom of the second, when Aubrey Sollano first tripled and then was scored on a Makayla Overton single into left. After a sacrifice bunt, Emani Moore tripled to left, scoring Overton, and a Giselle Morales single up the middle on the next at-bat scored Moore. Later in the inning, Robles singled, bringing home Morales in the process, as Moreno Valley built itself a comfortable 9-2 lead.

Coachella got a run back in the top of the third on a Jaeda Diaz RBI single, but the team wasn't able to add on any more runs after a strikeout and caught stealing attempt. Coachella once again left two runners stranded in the top of the fourth, and after getting another run in the top of the fifth, when Victoria Guzman scored on a wild pitch, Coachella stranded the bases loaded trailing 9-4.

Morales came in to close in the top of the sixth for Moreno Valley, relieving Moore. Morales gave up a leadoff triple to Leilani Landeros, but she was caught trying to steal home on the next at-bat. After allowing a single, Morales recorded a strikeout and a ground out to win the game for Moreno Valley 9-4.

Bronco 12U Championship: Redlands, California 11 Ramona, California 1

Redlands, California started off the Bronco 12U championship game of the PONY West Zone Girls Softball World Series tagging Ramona, California for five runs and never looked back, scoring runs in each of the following innings, while playing sensational defense, to win 11-1 in a shortened 10-run rule game.

In the top of the first inning, with two outs, Redlands went on a rally of five-straight singles, which resulted in five runs scored to set the tone for the game. Redlands continued to add on in the top of the second, when Jayna Lopesz hit a two-RBI single to right field to make it 7-0. But Ramona responded with a RBI single of its own in the bottom of the second. A double play with two runners in scoring position ended a chance for Ramona to cut the deficit after two complete (7-1 Redlands).

A single and a walk set the table for Redlands in the top of the third, and Anessa Jimenez scored, when starting pitcher Rosalinda Ramirez reached on an error. After allowing a single in the bottom of the third, Ramirez retired the next nine-consecutive batters she faced, as her team built a 10-run lead. Ramirez finished the day going five innings strong, allowing just one run on three hits, while striking out two and walking two, as Redlands came away with the 10-run rule victory 11-1 in five innings.

Pony 14U Championship: El Monte, California 6 High Desert (Revenge), California 4

El Monte starting pitcher Xitlali Montes was cruising through the first six innings of the Pony 14U championship game of the PONY West Zone Girls Softball World Series, before High Desert (Revenge), California made its comeback in its final chance at the plate. But after scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to cut the deficit to two, High Desert could not come up with the hit it needed, as El Monte came away with the win 6-4.

The game started off well for El Monte, as four-straight singles and a sacrifice fly gave the team a 3-0 advantage after one complete. El Monte added a run in the bottom of the third, when Abril Gonzalez doubled home Mariah Torres, after she recorded a single and advanced to second on a passed ball (4-0).

After sending down the first 11 High Desert batters she faced to start the game, Montes finally allowed a single in the top of the fourth, but she quickly responded with a ground out to end the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, El Monte's Charlene Sanchez singled, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball to start the inning. Alexis Ortega walked, and Alexis Cobos hit a blooper into right field that was misplayed for an error, scoring Sanchez and moving Ortega to third. Torres then grounded out, but she recorded a valuable RBI to give El Monte a 6-0 lead. High Desert was finally able to get to Montes in the top of the fifth, as a couple of wild pitches cost her team a run.

The climactic moment of the game was in the top of the seventh, when High Desert's Selena Frasto hit a double, Lita Suarez bunted and reached on an error, scoring Frasto and Rylin Carrillo tripled to score Suarez to cut the lead to three. Montes was then relieved by Ortega, finishing her solid performance in the championship game. But after a High Desert RBI ground out, the lead was just two. After a pop out, High Desert's Alina Lopez reached on an error, but Ortega was able to induce a ground ball and get the out to win the game 6-4.

Three earned runs were charged to Montes, but she finished the game with six innings pitched and a strikeout, while allowing six hits and a walk. Ortega completed one inning, allowing two hits, but no runs.

Colt/Palomino combined 16/18U Championship: Manila, Philippines 7 Hemet/San Jacinto (Xplozion), California 1

Thanks to a complete game, two-hit, one earned run (on a home run) performance by starting pitcher Alma Tauli, Manila, Philippines was able to build a sizable lead and lean on the talents of their winning pitcher to record a 7-1 victory over Hemet/San Jacinto (Xplozion), California in the Colt/Palomino 16/18U championship game of the PONY West Zone Girls Softball World Series.

A two-out, two-RBI double by Khrisha Cantor gave Manila an early 2-0 lead after the first half-inning of the game. Solo home runs by Mary Pasadas in the top of the second and Ma Angelu Gabriel in the top of the fourth gave the Asia-Pacific Zone squad a comfortable 4-0 lead, and the Filipinos really broke the game open later in the top of the fifth, when Cantor hit a bases clearly double (7-0).

After sending nine-consecutive Hemet/San Jacinto batters down in order from the first through fourth innings, the Californians finally got to Tauli, as Danielle Lebsock hit a solo homer to left (7-1 Manila). But over the next half of the game, Tauli was arguably just as good as the first, as she went the distance (seven innings), allowing just one run on two hits and three walks while striking out five.

Gabriel and Maria Bautista paced Manila with three hits each, while Cantor led the team with five RBI. Bautista and Shaina Camacho both recorded two runs scored apiece, leading the team, as Manila came away with a 7-1 victory.
