Twice as Nice: Colorado Rush pair receive USWNT U-17 camp invite

While the past year was full of disappointment for many soccer players, Colorado Rush girls 04 midfielder Peyton Nourse’s stung even more when she found out she didn’t get invited to the US Women’s National Team U-15 camp.

“Making the national team has been one of my goals for as long as I can remember,” Peyton said. “And so the first year I was here and didn't make it, that kind of hurt.”

But Peyton used that disappointment to fuel her ambition and tweak her approach to the game—and the news in 2021 was quite different. “Hearing that I got called into the camp was really cool,” said Peyton, who is currently participating in the USWNT U-17 virtual camp until the team is cleared to practice together. “Over the past year, I started just playing for myself to have fun and not trying to impress other people.”

“Peyton is an incredible competitor, whether in training or during the game,” Colorado Rush technical director and U-17 Academy coach Russell Finch said. “She is relentless in the pursuit of giving her best, day in and day out.”

Peyton turned plenty of heads with her limited playing opportunities last year, but she wasn’t the only Colorado Rush player impressing national team coaches. Taylor Meisner, a midfielder on the Colorado Rush 05 team, also received her first invite to the USWNT U-17 virtual camp. “I’m just really excited about this opportunity,” Taylor said. “It’s been a lot of hard work to get where I am right now, and I'm just really honored to be called up.”

During Taylor’s development with Colorado Rush, she found the Rush core value of tenacity as something that elevated her game. “There were just moments in games where I didn’t feel like I was working as hard as I could,” she said. “And then my coach was like, ‘Taylor, you need to work harder.’ And I realized when I work hard, my intensity level rises. So, I just play a lot better when I'm working hard. “Tenacity is definitely one of my most important core values. It's just hard work. I want to be the hardest working player on the field and I think that's just really important to do.”

Tony Rosales, the Colorado Rush U-16 Academy head coach, echoed Taylor’s thoughts. “Taylor is a tenacious player who works hard both on and off the field. Her drive to continually get better is evident by the growth she continues to make and the level she not only aspires to be at, but also the level she chooses to hold her team accountable to.” Both Peyton and Taylor are connecting with the USWNT U-17 camp players through a series of Zoom calls and at-home training assignments, but will train in-person as soon as health officials deem it safe.
