The DICK'S SPORTING GOODS PONY LEAGUE WORLD SERIES

GM #3: Bronx, New York 15 Washington County, PA 13 (F/8)

In the highest-scoring game at the DICK’S Sporting Goods PONY League World Series since Mon-Yough, Pennsylvania defeated Bay County, Michigan 16-14 in 2013, East Zone Champion Bronx, New York outlasted Host Washington County, Pennsylvania in a near-four hour long 15-13 marathon.

Ten combined errors and 15 walks were recorded in the game. Twenty-one combined runners were stranded on the base paths, while Bronx used nine different pitchers in the contest. Washington County led the game 8-3, after three innings, before Bronx came back to lead 9-8, after six complete.

Trailing a run going into the bottom of the seventh inning, following a groundout, Austyn Winkleblech reached on an error to give Washington County a valuable base runner. Winkleblech moved up to second on a passed ball and then advanced to third on Ryan Silver’s groundout. On a 2-1 count, Winkleblec scored on a wild pitch to tie the game (9-9) and send it to extra innings.

Bronx stole the game’s momentum in the top of the eighth thanks to the offense capitalizing on Washington County’s mistakes. With runners on the corners and one out, Julián Ventura connected on an RBI single that scored Alvy Grullom to put the team ahead 10-9. Back-to-back errors led to two more Bronx runs. A hit batsman, a walk and another error gave New York a six-run lead (15-9).

Washington County made it interesting, as the hometown fans were on their feet, hoping to will their team to victory. Aidan Metts walked, and Ty and Banco and Zachary McClenathan hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Connor Steele plated Metts on his single to left field, and then Connor Roberts hit a sacrifice fly that scored Banco from third (15-11). Winkleblech was hit by a pitch to once again load the bases. Then, back-to-back walks by Silver and Brugard cut the Washington County deficit to just two (15-13).

Unfortunately for the Hosts, back-to-back strikeouts tossed by Josué Cepeda ended the rally and the game.

Bronx racked up 14 hits in the game, led by Keldrin Rodríguez, who was 3-for-3 with two home runs, three RBI and four runs scored. Cepeda tied Rodríguez for the team-lead with three RBI, while also hitting a home run. For Washington, Silver led the squad during a 3-for-4 day. Nicholas Hilbert was the team leader in RBI with three.
