The DICK'S SPORTING GOODS PONY LEAGUE WORLD SERIES

GM #10: Brownsville, TX 11 Bronx, NY 9 (F/7)

After a 4:56 rain delay, beginning at 2:28 p.m., South Zone Champion Brownsville, TX trailed 8-6. When the contest resumed in the bottom of the fourth at 7:24 p.m., Brownsville’s Jose Gutierrez took the second pitch deep for a three-run home run that lifted them to a 9-8 lead and the champions from the South Zone never looked back and eliminated the East Zone Champions Bronx, NY 11-9 in game 10 of the 2018 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series.

Not only did Gutierrez solidify the lead and ultimately the game with his home run, he pitched fairly well allowing three runs, four hits, four walks and struck out two over 4.1 innings. Gutierrez fittingly enough picked up the win.

Brownsville jumped out of the gate with a four spot in the first inning and looked to be cruising until Bronx exploded for six runs in the top of the third.

It all began with Bronx’s first hit of the game, a solo home run by Miguel Bodre and then Bronx capitalized on three walks, two wild pitches and an error for the other five runs to lead 6-4.

Brownsville retied the game with a home run by Luis Balderas and a double to tie the game at 6-6 through three innings.

Bronx regained the lead in the fourth prior to the delay, 8-6, highlighted by Justin Gotay’s solo home run.

The Bronx couldn’t catch up despite scoring another run in the sixth inning to make it 10-9 and were sent home after three games in the 2018 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series.

Alvy Grullom took the loss for Bronx allowing eight runs (four earned), nine hits and struck out two. Relief pitching was solid for Bronx as Gotay and Jayden Meregildo combined to allow three runs, two hits, two walks and a strikeout in 2.2 combined innings.

With the victory, Brownsville still has life in the 2018 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series and will face either Mexico Zone Champion Tijuana, MX or West Zone Champion Long Beach, CA at approximately 3 p.m. in a five inning win or go home contest for a chance to play in the semifinals.

For the Bronx, its 2018 Dick’s Sporting Goods Pony League World Series ends with a 1-2 record. It’s losses came to Brownsville and Long Beach (8-0) and its victory was a thrilling 15-13 win over Host Washington County, PA.
