Minnesota Rush REC Philosophy

Minnesota Rush (formerly RYSA) REC soccer program is designed to teach players soccer skills, teamwork and sportsmanship in an environment where participation and fun are the focus, not competition.

The philosophy of the Recreational Soccer program is to ensure that all youth in Rochester and the surrounding communities have the opportunity to learn the game of soccer. The program provides a low-cost, safe and structured soccer experience for all area youth in grades K-9 and can serve as a starting point before moving to more competitive programs.

General Information

Through the Minnesota Rush (formerly RYSA) Rec league, teams play other teams from Rochester and the nearby surrounding communities. To encourage a fun and developmental atmosphere, each child plays at least half of each game, no matter the skill level. Scores and league standings are not recorded.

Summer 2019 Recreation League
In the summer Rec season, all grades play in league play.   If the number of registered 3rd-6th grade players is high enough in each individual group, then teams may be formed separately for each grade and gender.  Otherwise grade levels may be combined (i.e. 3rd-4th and 5th-6th) but boys and girls teams will still be formed separately.

NOTE:  For Grades K-2 please check out Soccer World's website by clicking here (CLOSED)Grades K-2 will participate in Soccer World's Micro Leagues.

NOTE:   The new US Soccer birth year guidelines that were implemented in the fall of 2016 do not apply to the Rec League.   All Rec League players will be placed on teams based on what grade the player was enrolled at the end of the last school year.

  • Season starts the week of July 8 and ends on August 10
  • Teams will practice once a week  (see practice schedule below)
  • For Rochester players, each team's practice location and time is dependent on the head coach.   When possible, we place players on teams that practice in the part of town that the family prefers (i.e. NW, NE, SE, SW) However, this is all determined by the number of coaches we have for each area.
  • All games are held on Saturdays in Rochester from July 13 thru August 10
  • Teams will play games against other teams of the same grade(s) and gender.
  • Each player must wear shoes, shin guards, socks that completely cover the shin guards, shorts or long pants and a team shirt.
  • Soccer shoes are strongly recommended but shoes are not required to have cleats. Tennis shoes are allowed. If the shoes are not soccer shoes but they do have cleats, they must not have any sharp edges. Shoes with toe cleats are not allowed.
  • Glasses must be secured by a strap and no jewelry can be worn.

Registration Information

Summer 2019 Rec Player Registration
When registering your child for the Summer 2019 Rec season, be sure to select the grade that they are enrolled in for the 2018-19 school year.

**If you are a MAYO EMPLOYEE, please do not use your MAYO email address for your contact.  MAYO has a very strict firewall and we are learning our email reminders are not going through.**

We started using a new registration platform for spring 2018 - if you did not register a player for the spring 2018, fall 2018 or spring 2019 seasons, then you will need to create your family account and then add your children in the new system.   If you have any questions please email Kevin at [email protected]

For Financial aid assistance please fill out the registration until you get to the check out page.  At that point just simply stop and close out the window.  Proceed to our Fin Aid page and fill out the PDF document and mail or email it in.  Once we receive it we will let you know if you have been approved or not.

Rochester Team Formation
Team formation for players that live in Rochester is done as follows:
  • Enough volunteer coaches must be found for each team for each grade level and gender
  • When possible, players are then assigned to teams based on their preferred quadrant of town
    • This is dependent on the ratio of the number of players to coaches in each quadrant of town.
    • When the ratio of players to coaches does not work out perfectly, then some players will be assigned to teams that practice in another quadrant of town
    • Minnesota Rush (formerly RYSA) does not form school or neighborhood teams
  • As part of a player's registration, parents can request to have 1 friend placed on the same team as their child. Only 1 friend request will be allowed and both families involved must request each other in order to be sure that this request will be honored
    • Coaches that request to coach together will count toward the family's 'friend request' as their children are then placed on the same team
    • No other special requests for players to be placed on the same team with other players or coaches will be honored
    • Players registering after teams have been formed will be placed on a team that is most in need of players.  Friend requests will only be honored for these late registrations if all teams in that grade level have an equal number of open spots
