	BCB Announces Chuck Schafer Scholarship Winners Citing that sportsmanship and leadership were formed in their days playing Little League Baseball and Softball, Sophia McGee and Owen Lewis have been awarded the 2019 Chuck Schafer Memorial Scholarship from Boardman Community Baseball. The winners will be honored and receive their checks for $2,500 each during the 16th annual Chuck Schafer Scholarship Tournament June 28th through June 30th at the Fields of Dreams Complex on McClurg Road in Boardman. “From the very first time I set foot on the softball field, Boardman Community Baseball was shaping my future” said McGee. “From the friendships I made to the skills I gained, the sport of softball prepared me for success in so many endeavors”. Lewis noted, “I moved to Boardman in 2007, and the transition was greatly aided by the Boardman baseball community. I believe the friendliness of my teammates, and my coaches positively affected my life in multiple ways”. McGee noted that BCB provided a great foundation to her personality. “Growing up playing a structured sport taught me concepts such as rules, taking turns and persevering. Softball is likely the origin of my love for sports”. McGee who earned a 4.0 GPA at Boardman High School was a four year member of the track team and four year member and co-captain and first team all-conference of the cross country team. She also was active in other school activities including Marching band, Wind Ensemble, Pit Orchestra, French Club, Emerging Leaders and Key Club. Sophia plans on majoring in environmental engineering at Duke University. “Teamwork is integral to the success of any team. I quickly learned that without teamwork and collaboration, goals are often not achievable. I was taught to always respect the other team no matter the outcome of the game and this lesson is easily applicable to any other form of competition in your life” says Lewis. Lewis played baseball, soccer and tennis while attending Ursuline High School. In addition to sports he also was involved with math club, Spanish club, National Honors Society, as well as being an Alter server. Lewis graduated with a 4.5 GPA and plans on majoring in Biology in college. My favorite memory of Boardman Community Baseball was being able to represent Boardman on the Pony League all-star team as a pitcher”. McGee noted, “Softball revealed the wonders of hard work and determination. With that hard work, came great reward in the form of ice cream, smiles and even a state championship title. My time in BCB has given me memories and milestones and it has imparted in me so many traits that I could never imagine living without. “ Boardman Community Baseball honors its children who have shown that lessons learned on the ballfields can be carried to the classroom and throughout life, with the Chuck Schafer Scholarship. Chuck Schafer was a past coach, volunteer and league president who used his skills as a talented architect to design the Fields of Dreams Complex to cater to families who love Little League as he did. He believed in giving back to his community and paying it forward. This year will mark the 16th year holding the Chuck Schafer baseball Tournament. During this time, Boardman Community Baseball has awarded over $75,000 in scholarships to former BCB ball players. Top of Page
