General Expectations

General Expectations

Players:

  • Demonstrate and uphold the fundamentals of sportsmanship.
  • Discourage inappropriate behavior among teammates.
  • Respect host facilities and property.
  • Honor the decisions of officials without dispute.
  • Show respect for injured opponents.
  • Avoid applauding opponents' errors or penalties.
  • Refrain from heckling, jeering, or distracting the opposing team.
  • Never criticize teammates or coaches for losses.
  • Trust the judgment and strategies of the coach without second-guessing.
  • Display appropriate conduct before, during, and after contests.
  • Consistently give their best effort.

Coaches:

  • Set a positive example for players and others.
  • Emphasize the value of honest effort and adherence to the spirit and rules of the game.
  • Teach players their responsibilities regarding sportsmanship.
  • Discipline players for unsportsmanlike conduct and remove those who disregard disciplinary measures.
  • Be gracious hosts, treating opponents with respect and fairness.
  • Foster social interaction among coaches and players.
  • Respect officials’ decisions and model this behavior for players.
  • Educate players about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.
  • Support and promote the entire CYO program, not just their own team.
  • Prioritize CYO games over other leagues and tournaments.
  • Volunteer for gym duties and ensure facilities are clean after games.
  • Train parents or other adults to operate the game clock and maintain the game book accurately.
  • Ensure those handling the clock and book serve as impartial extensions of the officials.
  • Communicate effectively with players and their parents.

Parents and Spectators:

  • Show courtesy to players, coaches, and fans of both teams.
  • Applaud good plays, including those by opponents.
  • Respect and support the decisions of officials.
  • Serve as positive role models for players.
  • Treat host and opponent facilities with respect.
  • Avoid coaching from the sidelines.
  • Adhere to the CYONY Code of Conduct.
  • Maintain a positive and supportive attitude, remembering that the players are children.
  • Assist with game duties such as managing the clock, maintaining the game book, working the door, or helping with kitchen duty and clean-up during home games.

Consequences

Players, coaches, or spectators who violate the CYO Code of Conduct may face immediate suspension or expulsion from CYO activities. The head coach is ultimately responsible for the behavior of their players, assistant coaches, and fans. Parish administrators and head coaches attending games are expected to manage the conduct of their spectators.
