CE Places 3 on NJYS ODP Teams

This article originally appeared in the Cape May County Herald on 11/08/2018.

Cape Express Soccer Club announced three players were named to the prestigious New Jersey Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program. The NJYS ODP program held state-wide tryouts in each gender and age group and chose the best players in each group for the Final State Team. The Final State Team will represent New Jersey in tournaments against other state teams in US Youth Soccer’s Region I. Region I is one of four regions throughout the country and encompasses states from Maine to West Virginia.

Cape Express players chosen for the 2018-19 year include:

Colin Jastremski, 11, Burleigh: Colin plays on the club’s U13 boys’ team and is a sixth-grade student in Lower Township. Within the Cape Express Soccer Club, Colin’s abilities have gained him the opportunity to play in a division older than his actual age. Even on an older team, Colin has quickly become an important component in their success.

Sianna King, 12, Court House: Sianna plays on the Cape Express U13 girls’ team. She is a central midfielder and has played a significant role in the team’s recent successes. As a seventh grader at Richard M. Teitelman School, she is also a leader on her school soccer team. Sianna also plays lacrosse, basketball and dances.

Steven Berrodin, 13, Swainton: Steven plays central midfield on the club’s very successful 2005 boys’ team. This is Steven’s third straight year making the Final State Team. In each of the past two years, Steven has gone on to earn a place on the Region I ODP team. The Region I team is formed after all the players form the 13 state ODP teams in Region I hold a collective tryout. Making the Region I team is an exceptional achievement that affords Steven the opportunity to train with some of the best players of his age in the entire country. Steven is currently an eighth-grade student at Middle Township Middle School and also plays a key role on his school’s team.

Cape Express Director of Coaching and former ODP director Charlie Duccilli noted that the players competing in ODP are at the highest caliber from around the state. They go through several rounds of tryouts in order to make the state team, then work to make regionals and possibly national.

Duccilli stressed that commitment has almost as much to do with the outcome as talent. The young athletes and their families must sign up for extensive travel and plenty of time spent training. He also mentioned that these programs are a key part in college recruiting.

Currently, there are three New Jersey players on the US Women’s National Team including Carli Lloyd, Tobin Heath and Danielle Colaprico and two on the US Men’s National Team including Matt Miazga and Michael Bradley who went through the ODP program.
