U17s Advance to Nationals
Since 2014, the U17s have had their eyes set on a State Cup title. For two consecutive years (2014 & 2015) they reached the championship match, only to be denied.
This Spring they finally achieved their goal... and oh, so much more.
After claiming the NJYS President's Cup State Title on May 1, the U17s were invited to represent the State of New Jersey at the Regional Tournament in Reisterstown, Maryland, over Memorial Day Weekend.
Day 1 of the Regional Tournament saw the 17s matched up against State Champions from Rhode Island and Delaware. They dispatched those foes 3-0 and 2-0, respectively.
On Day 2, Cape fell to the State Champions from Maryland, 0-2.
Their 2-1 record through group play was good enough for a berth in the semi-final round, where a final minute goal from Trent Canter saw them overcome the State Champions from New Hampshire 2-1.
Their spot in the Regional Final was dimmed only by the prospect of a rematch against the State Champions from Maryland; the only team to defeat the 17s in several months.
The result of the Regional Final, however, would not resemble the earlier match against Maryland in any way.
Though the boys found themselves down 0-1 at the interval, late goals from Spencer Infranco and Zack Thomas, complemented by outstanding team defense and goalkeeping by Anthony Zampirri, saw the 17s through to the final whistle.
They were crowned USYS President's Cup Region 1 Champions.
Now their story reaches its final chapter - a trip to the USYS President's Cup National Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma, in mid-July. There the boys will face the Regional Champions from US Soccer's other 3 regions. That's right, they've reached a National "Final Four".
We wish the boys luck and success as they prepare for the final leg of their epic journey.
Win or lose, they have done all of us - the Club, the community, their respective schools, their families, and their friends - proud.
GOOD LUCK, BOYS!
