Day 3 Recap at the Pony & Colt European Zone Championships

With pool play completed, the rubber met the road at the SUMA Pony & Colt European Zone Championships Saturday in Prague, Czech Republic, as teams began to punch their tickets to Sunday's semifinals and finals in Pony and Colt baseball and girls softball.

Colt 16U baseball:

In the first of four quarterfinal matches, Holland U16 C used a four-run bottom of the third inning to defeat the Netherlands' Future Star Academy 4-3. Holland U16 C took advantage of several Future Star Academy miscues in the inning to take a lead it never surrendered. The Czech Academy's Michal Kovala tossed five innings of one-run ball on one hit and five walks, while striking out seven to lead his team to an 8-1 victory over the Czech 15U national team. The Berlin Academy pulled off the upset of the two-time defending Zone Champions from Holland U16 A 9-6 thanks in part to a four-run top of the seventh inning. Lukas Reichert's two-RBI double gave the Germans valuable insurance runs to close out the game confidently and move on to Sunday's semifinals. In the fourth quarterfinal, Holland U16 B upended Catalonia, Spain 5-4 in a fiercely competitive battle that came down to a walk off walk by Luka Pastor with two outs. Holland U16 C will do battle with the Czech Academy, while Holland U16 B will take on the Berlin Academy, both at 9 a.m. to determine who moves on to the championship game at 4 p.m. (local time Prague).

Pony 14U baseball:

In Pony baseball, the two-time defending Zone winners from the Netherlands picked up two narrow victories, first over the Czech Academy B (5-3) and then Hrosi Brno (10-9) to advance to the championship game. Against Hrosni Brno, the Czechs crawled back from a 9-4 deficit, after the first inning to tie the game at nine, going into the bottom of the fifth. With runners on the corners and one out, Thibaud Pastor knocked in Ryan Hoogendorn on a single to win the game. The London Archers passed a test from Israel (4-2), before shutting out the German Academy (7-0) to meet up with the Netherlands. Against Israel, London's Django Hendrickson did most of the heavy lifting on the mound, going 5.2 innings, allowing just two runs on six hits, while striking out 11. Against Germany, Andrew Painter tossed a complete game shutout, completing six innings with six strikeouts, while allowing four hits and three walks. The Netherlands faces the London Archers in tomorrow's championship game at 2 p.m (local time Prague).
