2019 Mustang World Series Day Two Recap

Game 5: Manila, PH Defeats Santo Domingo, DR 15-8

In game five of the 2019 Mustang World Series, Manila, Philippines defeated Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic 15-8. Mark Olayvar collected three RBI’s to help power Manila’s offense.


Santo Domingo scored one run in the bottom of the second to open the scoring and take the lead. Yalier Polonia reached on a defensive error to start the inning. Polonia advanced to second due to a passed ball and moved to third thanks to Dylam Padilla grounding out into a fielder’s choice. A balk allowed Polonia to score, giving the Dominicans a 1-0 lead. 


Manila responded in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs. With one out, Axl Fallorina reached on an error, followed by Martino Ilagan’s walk. A passed ball moved Fallorina to third and Ilagan to second. Olayvar then reached on an error, which scored both Fallorina and Ilagan. Jorell Ching and Jaden DeVenecia both walked, loading the bases with one out. A wild pitch scored Olayvar and also advanced Ching to third and DeVenecia to second. Juancho Gatmaitan then singled, scoring Ching for the fourth run of the inning and moving DeVenecia to third. Santino Malabanan hit a ground ball that resulted in DeVenecia being thrown out while trying to score, but Gatmaitan advanced to third and Malabanan advanced to second on the same play. Consecutive passed balls allowed both Gatmaitan and Malabanan to score, giving Manila a 6-1 lead. 


Santo Domingo scored one run in the bottom of the fourth to respond. Cristopher Paniagua led off the inning with an infield single. Two defensive errors allowed Paniagua to reach third, and Feliant Perez walked, putting runners on the corners. A wild pitch allowed Paniagua to score, giving the Dominicans their second run of the game. 


Manila added two more runs in the top of the fifth to expand on its lead. To start the inning, Rafael Blaza and Fallorina both singled, which put runners on the corners. Olayvar hit into a fielder’s choice that scored Blaza and moved Fallorina to third. Fallorina then successfully stole home, giving Manila an 8-2 lead.


Santo Domingo continued to fight back, scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth. Marc Ascencio led off the inning with a single before stealing second and advancing to third on fielder’s choice. A passed ball allowed Ascencio to score, making the score 8-3 in favor of Manila. 


Manila scored seven runs in the top of the sixth to lengthen its lead. To begin the inning, John Panopio was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a balk. A fielder’s choice moved Panopio to third before another passed ball allowed him to score. Malabanan reached base on a fielder’s choice and Christian Marantal walked. A balk moved both of them into scoring position before a wild pitch scored Malabanan and moved Marantal to third. Blaza then walked, putting runners on the corners. A balk scored Marantal and advanced Blaza to second before Fallorina tripled, which scored Blaza to give Manila a 12-3 lead. Ilagan and Olayvar both walked, loading the bases. A balk then scored Fallorina and moved Ilagan to third and Olayvar to second. A passed ball allowed both Illagan and Olayvar to score, giving Manila a 15-3 lead. 


The Dominicans rallied in the bottom of the sixth, scoring five runs. Consecutive walks and double steal put Cesar Pena on third and Jacob Rodriguez on third. Ascencio was then hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Reynol Cepeda singled, which scored Pena and Rodriguez, making the score 15-5. Polonia then doubled, scoring Ascencio and Cepeda. Polonia then stole third and home, giving Santo Domingo its eighth and final run. 


Manila will face Chicago, Illinois in an elimination game at 10:00 a.m. CT/US on Sunday, August 4 at the Youngsville Sports Complex. Santo Domingo is eliminated from the tournament after compiling a 0-2 record but will face Youngsville, Louisiana in a consolation game at 12:00 p.m. CT/US on Sunday, August 4.


Game 6: The Bronx, NY Defeats Youngsville, LA 14-1

In game six of the 2019 Mustang World Series, the Bronx, New York defeated Youngsville, Louisiana 14-1. The Bronx’s pitchers stifled Youngsville, allowing zero earned runs and striking out six over four innings. 


The Bronx scored five runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to an early lead. Alex Rodriguez started the scoring with an RBI single that scored Kendry Pegeuro. Rodriguez stole second and third before Branden Rosario hit into a fielder’s choice that allowed him to score. After Noe Mercedes singled and stole second and third, a passed ball let him score the Bronx’s third run of the game. Flenix Ramirez walked before stealing second and third and scoring on a passed ball. The fifth and final run of the inning came on another passed ball that scored Luis Garcia. 


Youngsville scored its only run in the top of the second inning. After Brendan Shullaw reached on an error and stole second and third, a passed ball allowed him to score.


The Bronx’s offense continued to produce, scoring five more runs in the bottom of the second. Mercedes opened the inning’s scoring with a triple that brought in Pegeuro. A single by Ramirez then scored Mercedes, making the score 7-1 in favor of the Bronx. After Ramirez stole second, consecutive passed balls allowed him to move to third and score. Another passed ball scored Garcia for the fourth run of the inning. The fifth and final run of the inning came from a defensive error that allowed Jose Vargas to score. 


The Bronx added four more runs in the bottom of the third to expand its lead. After Angel Poche opened the inning with a single, Luis Nunez’s double scored Poche for the first run of the inning. After Mercedes was hit by a pitch, a fielder’s choice moved Nunez to third and Mercedes to second. Garcia then hit an infield single that scored Nunez and moved Mercedes to third. A fielder’s choice let Mercedes score and moved Garcia to third. The final run of the inning and game came from a passed ball that scored Garcia. 


The Bronx avoids elimination and will play Castroville, Texas in another elimination game at 10:00 a.m. CT/US at the Youngsville Sports Complex.  Youngsville is eliminated from the tournament but will play Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic in a consolation game at 12:00 p.m. CT/US at the Youngsville Sports Complex.

Game 7: Placentia, CA Defeats Chicago, IL 9-3

In game seven of the 2019 Mustang World Series, Placentia, California defeated Chicago, Illinois 9-3. Placentia’s pitchers allowed only three earned runs and struck out eight over six innings pitched, proving to be challenging to Chicago’s batters.


Placentia scored one run in the bottom of the first to open the game’s scoring. Logan Sylvester opened the hitting with a single to center field. Sylvester stole second before Andrew Green walked. Placentia then successfully executed a double steal that moved Sylvester to third and Green to second. A fielding error then allowed Sylvester to score, giving Placentia a 1-0 lead. 


Chicago scored one run in the top of the second to tie the game. Isaac Ochoa opened the hitting for the inning with a single to center field. Ochoa then stole second and third before scoring on a passed ball to give Chicago its first run of the game. 


Placentia added another run in the bottom of the second to regain the lead. After Justin Karg walked, he stole second and third before a passed ball allowed him to score. 


Placentia scored two more runs in the bottom of the third to expand its lead. John Burdge hit an infield single and proceeded to steal second and third before Darius Selway walked to put runners on the corners. A passed ball let Burdge score Placentia’s first run of the inning. Selway advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt before Karg hit a single that scored Selway. 


Placentia added another two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Sylvester walked, stole second, and advanced to third on a fielder’s choice. Tucker Hunnicutt then doubled, scoring Sylvester. Hunnicutt advanced to third on a passed ball before scoring on a defensive error to give Placentia a 6-1 lead. 


Chicago scored two runs in the top of the fifth to respond. Consecutive doubles by Jesiah Dawson and Bryce Gilmore put runners on second and third for Chicago. Colin White then singled to score Dawson and move Gilmore to third. Gilmore successfully stole home to give Chicago its third run of the game. 


Placentia plated three runs in the bottom of the fifth to add to its lead. Karg laid down a successful bunt before stealing second and third. A fielding error on Mason Shackleton’s ground ball allowed Karg to score and let Schackleton reach first. Shackleton stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball before a fielding error on Jacob Vasquez’s ground ball scored Shackleton. Multiple fielding errors allowed Vasquez to reach third before he scored Placentia’s ninth run of the game on a wild pitch.


Placentia will face the winner of Manila, Philippines and Chicago, Illinois at 6:00 p.m. CT/US on Sunday, August 4 at the Youngsville Sports Complex. Chicago will face elimination in its game against the Philippines at 10:00 a.m. CT/US on Sunday, August 4.


Game 8: Mexicali, MX Defeats Castroville, TX 12-2

In game eight of the 2019 Mustang World Series (MWS), Mexicali, Mexico defeated Castroville, Texas 12-2 in a shortened 10 run rule five inning game. Jose Salcido’s three RBI’s powered Mexicali’s offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Heriberto Vilaseñor proved to be challenging to opposing batters, allowing only two earned runs over five innings and striking out 14, a new MWS record. 


Mexicali scored three runs in the top of the first to jump out to an early lead. Jose Salcido’s fielder’s choice scored both Francisco Borquez and Ivan Romero to give the Mexicans a 2-0 lead. Salcido then stole second before two wild pitches allowed him to score the third and final run of the inning. 


Castroville scored two runs in the bottom of the second to answer. Wyatt Ducs was hit by a pitch before he scored thanks to Brady Fillinger’s triple. A wild pitch then allowed Fillinger to score, making the score 3-2.


Mexicali answered in the top of the third, scoring two runs. After Vilaseñor doubled and stole third, a passed ball allowed him to score Mexicali’s fourth run. Salcido walked and advanced to third on two passed balls before Andre Figueroa’s sacrifice fly let him score.


Mexicali added two more runs in the top of the fourth to add to its lead. A fielder’s choice scored Keysen Escamilla after Escamilla had walked and stole second and third. Vilaseñor also walked and advanced to third on the same fielder’s choice that scored Escamilla. Another fielder’s choice let Vilaseñor score Mexicali’s seventh run of the game. 


Mexicali plated five more runs in the top of the fifth to win the game. Santiago Tong opened the inning’s scoring with an RBI single that scored Angel Nuñez. Tong also scored thanks to Romero’s single to left field. Romero then stole second and third before scoring Mexicali’s third run of the inning on a passed ball. For the inning’s fourth run, Vilaseñor hit a single that scored Escamilla. Vilaseñor then stole second, third, and home to win the game for Mexicali.


Mexicali will face the winner of Castroville, Texas vs. the Bronx, New York at 6:00 p.m. CT/US on Sunday, August 4 at the Youngsville Sports Complex. Castroville will play the Bronx in an elimination game at 10:00 a.m. CT/US on Sunday, August 4.
