Seven-Goal Outburst Leads Falcons To 14th-Consecutive Conference Crown

GRANTHAM, Pa. – The No. 1 Messiah field hockey team captured its 14th-straight MAC Commonwealth Championship on Saturday afternoon, topping visiting No. 3 Widener University, 7-3, at Anderson Field in the MAC Commonwealth Championship. Makayla Malcolm recorded a hat trick and an assist in the conference-clinching win, earning MAC Commonwealth Tournament Most Valuable Player.

Nicole Shank, Leah Bryner, Jennie Young, and Ashlyn Smith all contributed goals for the Falcons. Junior goalkeeper recorded three saves in cage, earning her 15th win of the season.

The first half of play was action-packed, containing a total of seven goals, including four goals in the opening 5:53 of play. Malcolm began the scoring frenzy for the Falcons, notching an unassisted tally just 2:33 into the contest. Messiah doubled its advantage at the 11:45 mark as Smith contributed her ninth goal of the season, redirecting a driven pass from Claire Myers to give the Falcons an early two-goal edge. The Pride had an answer to their 2-0 deficit, using a breakaway goal from Margaret Howe-Consiglio to trim the score to 2-1. Messiah, scoring in identical fashion to its game-winning goal in Wednesday's MAC Commonwealth Semifinal tilt, answered promptly to restore its two-goal advantage with 9:07 remaining in the opening quarter. Shank received a pass from the end line by Bryner on a penalty corner opportunity, firing the shot low to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead.

Messiah outscored Widener in the second quarter, 2-1, to take a 5-2 lead heading into the halftime break. Malcolm added her second tally of the contest at the 6:25 mark to restore a two-goal lead (4-2) after the Pride trimmed its deficit to one in the beginning of the quarter, using a low-driven shot from Madi Radnoff. Despite Messiah holding a three-goal lead, the Falcons and Pride were level on shots (8-8) entering halftime.

The Falcons added an insurance goal in the third quarter behind Young's 10th goal of the season, assisted by Bryner. The goal increased Messiah's lead to a comfortable 6-2 advantage with 8:40 remaining in the quarter. The Pride answered by earning two penalty corners in the final eight minutes of the period, but the Falcons' defense prevailed. Entering the fourth and final quarter, the Falcons owned a firm four-goal lead.

Only 4:16 into the fourth quarter, the Falcons added their seventh goal of the game following a defensive save from Widener as Malcolm completed her hat trick. The junior forward's third goal of the contest extended the lead to 7-2. The Pride managed to scratch a goal back with 7:02 remaining when Madi Radnoff scored her second tally of the game, but Messiah was able to ride out the rest of the game, clinching the MAC Commonwealth Championship bout by a final score of 7-3.

Malcolm's three goals and an assist accounted for a total of seven points, a game-high mark. As mentioned above, Malcolm's championship performance earned her MAC Commonwealth Tournament MVP recognition.

Bryner recorded four points, scoring a goal and dishing out two assists. The victory marks Messiah field hockey's 27th conference title, its 14th-consecutive championship dating back to 2007.
