Field Hockey Falls On Road To Babson In NCAA Second Round

BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Messiah field hockey team's 2021 season came to a close on Saturday afternoon following a 6-1 road decision at Babson College in the NCAA Second Round. Leah Bryner provided the lone tally of the game for the Falcons, scoring the game's first goal on a rebound effort.
 
Junior goalkeeper Catie Brubaker was impressive in the cage, recording four first-half saves. Messiah played a strong game throughout the entirety of the contest, out-shooting Babson in the game, 16-14.
 
The Falcons and Beavers clashed for the first time since the 2016 season, a Final Four matchup in which Messiah defeated Babson, 5-2, leading to the program's first-ever NCAA National Championship.
 
Messiah got off to a strong start, earning a penalty corner opportunity just 54 seconds into the contest. The opportunity resulted in a shot that was blocked from Nicole Shank, put the Falcons cashed in on the early momentum they built for themselves. Just three minutes into the game, Bryner tallied her fifth goal of the season to give Messiah an early 1-0 edge. The goal was the result of a rebound, as Bryner fired the ball home in the middle of the shooting circle.
 
The Beavers did not waste much time finding their equalizing goal, leveling the score at 1-1 just two minutes later when Ellie Bisceglia converted her 13th goal of the season. Despite giving up the equalizer, the Falcons controlled the run of play, out-shooting Babson 5-1 in the opening 7:30 of the first quarter. In the final minute of the opening quarter, Catie Brubaker made her first save of the game, making a low, diving save to her right side to keep a Babson go-ahead goal out of the back of the cage.  
 
Makayla Malcolm, Ashlyn Smith (2), Nicole Shank, and Bryner all recorded shots in the first quarter.
 
Messiah began the second quarter with a quick penalty corner in the opening minute, resulting Smith's third shot of the game going just wide. The Beavers snagged their first lead of the game on a penalty stroke attempt with just under nine minutes remaining in the half. The attempt, taken by Millie Bradley, snuck under Brubaker's left side to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage. Babson, full of offensive momentum after the penalty stroke, went on to tally a third goal just one minute later behind a goal from Isabelle Fournier. The Beavers continued to pour it on as Brubaker made a phenomenal save to keep Messiah's deficit at two goals (3-1) when the junior goalkeeper made a sweeping save off her line to deny Lauren Curley.
 
The Falcons trailed entering halftime, 3-1, as Brubaker recorded an impressive four saves in the half. Messiah narrowly out-shot the Beavers heading into the break, 9-8, as Babson registered four shots in the final 10 minutes of the half.
 
Entering the second half, Messiah faced a two-goal deficit. The Falcons got off to a good start, recording a shot on goal from Malcolm that was matched by a save from Babson goalkeeper Cassidy Riley. With 6:05 gone in the third quarter, Brianne McGrath notched her 16th goal of the season the grow the Beavers' lead to a commanding three-goal (4-1) advantage. With just under a minute to play in the third period of play, Babson added a fifth goal, a shot by Quinn Greer that was tucked inside the left post. Entering the fourth quarter, the Beavers led the Falcons, 5-1.
 
Babson scored a sixth goal in the fourth quarter to increase its lead to five goals (6-1). Despite two penalty corners from the Falcons, the 6-1 score would hold, as the Beavers prevailed in the NCAA Second Round contest.
 
The loss snaps a 10-game winning streak spanning back to Sep.15. The Falcons end the 2021 campaign with an overall record of 17-3 (8-0 MAC Commonwealth). The 2021 season was impressive as Messiah clinched its sixth-consecutive undefeated MAC Commonwealth regular season, leading to the program's 27th conference championship (14th-straight).
