Field Hockey Decorated With All-Conference Nods

ANNVILLE, Pa. – On Tuesday morning, the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) released its 2021 All-MAC Commonwealth field hockey teams. The Falcons were well-represented with Jennie Young, Ashlyn Smith, and Nicole Shank all earning First-Team nods, as well as a Second-Team accolade going to junior goalkeeper Catie Brubaker. Young was honored with Offensive Player of the Year as head coach Brooke Good claimed her fifth Coach of the Year award.

Additionally, Makayla Malcolm, Lauren Seubert, and Claire Myers all earned All-MAC Commonwealth honorable mentions.

Young, who becomes the first MAC Offensive Player of the Year for Messiah field hockey since 2018 (Kezia Loht, Co-Player of the Year), led the Falcons in points with 10 goals and eight assists. Young's eight assists is tied for the most in the conference. The senior forward had a season-high six points in a home win over Eastern University (Oct. 16), recording a hat trick during the Senior Day festivities. Young received an All-MAC Commonwealth honorable mention during the 2019 campaign.

Shank, who received a Second-Team nod during the 2019 season, earns a First-Team honor for her 2021 contributions. The junior defender midfielder recorded key goals throughout the season, including a goal in each of Messiah's two MAC Commonwealth Tournament games. Shank finished with a career-high six goals and five assists and has recorded points in five-consecutive contests.

Smith, who earns her first all-conference accolade, tallied nine goals and four assists. Smith recorded scored a pair of goals in Messiah's home-opening win over Mary Washington (Sep. 4) and has scored goals in three out of the past four games. The junior midfielder has notched eight multi-point contests so far this season.

Brubaker has been an integral part of a Messiah defense that allows just 1.06 goals/game, a conference-best mark. The junior goalkeeper is sporting a mere GAA of 1.12, leading all MAC Commonwealth goalkeepers. Brubaker has accumulated 39 saves with a 0.696 save percentage, recording seven-save games on two occasions this year. Brubaker earns her career-first all-conference accolade.

Of the honorable mentions, Malcolm is fresh off of claiming the MAC Commonwealth Tournament Most Valuable Player award after recording a hat trick in the championship game. The junior forward leads the Falcons in goals with 14. Seubert has helped to anchor the Messiah defense all season long while contributing three penalty stroke tallies, one being a game-winning effort in a 3-2 double-overtime win at Widener University (Oct. 9). Myers has contributed to the strong Falcon defense all season long as well, dishing out an assist in the MAC Commonwealth championship game on Saturday.

As mentioned, Good earns her fifth MAC Commonwealth Coach of the Year award. In her 10th season at the helm, Good led the Falcons to their 14th-consecutive, sweeping the conference schedule for the sixth-straight campaign.

Messiah will make its 34th appearance in the NCAA Tournament tomorrow night, hosting the Stevens Institute of Technology Ducks at 5:00 p.m. on Anderson Field.
