Strong Fourth Quarter Leads No. 8 Falcons to Opening Victory

CARLISLE, Pa. - After nearly two years without a traditional competition, the No. 8 Messiah field hockey team kicked off the 2021 campaign with a come-from-behind 4-2 victory over the Dickinson Red Devils on a perfect Thursday afternoon. The Falcons struck for a goal just over two minutes into the season off the stick of Megan North, but Dickinson scored consecutive goals to take a 2-1 lead early in the third period. Messiah netted the final three tallies of the contest to earn the 4-2 victory to begin the season with a victory.

Coming off the bench, Teagan Murrie scored the game-tying and game-winning goals during a two-minute stretch at the end of the third quarter and start of the fourth to lead the Falcons' offense on the day.

Makayla Malcolm scored the Falcons' insurance goal midway through the fourth period.

Messiah will be back in action this weekend when they host the University of Mary Washington at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday on Anderson Field.

Fast Start
Just like their last full season, 2019, the Falcons wasted little time getting on the score board. In 2019 it was Taylor Wiederrecht scoring just seconds into the season, this season it was Megan North wearing the No. 24 jersey who put away a score in the opening minutes of a new season. Just over two minutes into the contest, Jennie Young carried down the right side and in a two-on-two situation, slotted a pass to North on the left post, who tapped home the feed for a 1-0 Messiah lead.

Dickinson Takes The Lead
That lead stood for nearly the entirety of the first half until the Red Devils slipped a rebound through with five minutes left before halftime to tie things up before the break. The game stood level at 1-1 heading into the half, with only five total shots taken between the two sides.

After the break, Dickinson controlled the opening touch and quickly played it forward. Hailey Womer scored her second goal in five minutes with a tally just 16 seconds into the half to take a 2-1 lead.

Murrie Nets a Pair
Teagan Murrie came off the bench for the Falcons on Thursday and was just the shot in the arm Messiah needed. After a shot spell at the end of the first quarter, Murrie entered the game late in the third and immediately ripped a reverse shot that missed wide. Less than a minute later, Murrie was at it again. Madi Johnson found Murried on the left side and her reverse shot rattled off the iron before finding the back of the cage to level the match at 2-2. The score came in the finaly minute of the period and the game headed to the fourth all even.

Less than a minute into the fourth, Messiah earned a penalty corner and the feed went to Murrie again on the left side. Murrie's more traditional shot found the back of the cage and gave the Falcons a 3-2 lead with just over 14 minutes left to play.

Insurance Tally
Messiah dominated the period, taking seven shots to just one from the Red Devils. Midway through the period the Falcons found their insurance goal off the stick of Makayla Malcolm. With the ball deep on the end line, Malcolm took possession from the goalie and swept a shot through for a 4-2 lead.

Messiah threatened for a fifth goal late, but held on for the 4-2 victory, their first win in 659 days (Nov. 13, 2019).

What's Up Next
With the victory, the Falcons improve to 1-0 and will be back in action on Saturday when they host the University of Mary Washington Eagles at 1:00 p.m. on Anderson Field. The Falcons and Eagles have played 11 times in their history with the Falcons owning a 9-2 overall record including a 3-1 victory in their last meeting on Sept. 30, 2015.
