Please find below important information regarding player behavior in games and practice, as well as parent behavior and expectations.

Player Behavior:

1. Attitude, Effort, Skill, and Attendance: Playing time will be determined based on attitude, effort, skill level, and attendance. It is crucial for players to maintain a positive attitude, give their best effort, continuously work on improving their skills, and attend practices regularly.

2. Importance of Practice: Practice is not optional and holds significant value in player development. It is important that players prioritize attending practices. If a practice needs to be missed, please inform the coaches in advance. This allows the coaches to prepare practice plans and make adjustments based on the number of players attending.

3. Learning at Practice: Practices focus on developing various aspects such as skills, game play strategies, effort, and conditioning. Players will learn fundamental basketball skills, teamwork, offensive and defensive strategies, and conditioning exercises to enhance their overall performance.

4. Continuous Activity: Unlike some other sports, basketball requires players to be continuously active for extended periods. There is minimal downtime, and players must remain engaged and active throughout the game. Players will be encouraged to play physically and tough as per the demands of the game, but they are also expected to control their emotions.

5. Minor Injuries: Basketball involves physical contact and movement, which may result in minor injuries such as bumps, bruises, sprains, floor burns, jammed fingers, and occasional contact with elbows. While these injuries can be painful, they are typically not serious. Players should be prepared for such occurrences and understand that they are a normal part of the game.

6. Teamwork: Emphasize the importance of teamwork to your child. Encourage them to support their teammates, communicate effectively on the court, and work together to achieve common goals.

7. Fair Play: Encourage your child to play by the rules, respecting the decisions made by referees and coaches. Discourage unsportsmanlike behavior such as trash talking, intentionally fouling, or displaying a negative attitude towards the opposing team.

8. Respect in Saint Anthony's Gym: In Saint Anthony's gym, we prioritize respect for everyone involved. Players are expected to act with focus and purpose during practice. When speaking, it should be to ask questions, encourage teammates, or communicate effectively while playing.

Parent Behavior and Expectations:

  1.   Positive Support: As parents, your role is crucial in creating a positive environment for all players. Support and encourage your child and their teammates, regardless of the game's outcome. Avoid criticizing players, coaches, or referees during or after the game.

  2.   Respectful Communication: If you have concerns or questions, address them respectfully with the appropriate coach or CYO representative. Avoid confrontations or negative interactions with coaches, referees, or other parents.

  3.   Volunteerism: Consider getting involved in the CYO program as a volunteer. This could include coaching, assisting with team activities, or helping with administrative tasks. Your support will greatly benefit the program and foster a sense of community.

  4.   Attendance and Punctuality: Ensure that your child attends practices and games regularly and arrives on time. Promptness demonstrates respect for the team and allows for proper preparation and warm-up.

  5.   Role Model Behavior: Remember that you serve as a role model for your child. Display good sportsmanship and encourage positive behavior both on and off the court. Promote values of integrity, respect, and humility.

6.  Avoid Coaching from the Stands: It is important for parents to refrain from coaching their child from the stands. Coaching instructions from multiple sources can confuse players and drown out the coach's guidance. Encourage your child to focus on the coach's instructions and their interactions with teammates during the game.

7. Taking Notes and Discussions: If you wish to provide constructive feedback or advice to your child, it is more effective to take notes or record film during the game and discuss with them afterward. This approach allows for meaningful conversations and avoids distractions during the game.

By following these guidelines, we can create a positive and enriching experience for all participants in the CYO basketball program. Thank you for your commitment to fostering a respectful and supportive environment for our young athletes.
