Wilsonville Basketball Association (WBA) FAQ - Recreational:
What age groups can play for the recreational program?
The South Metro Recreational League in which we play begins at 3rd grade and goes through 8th grade. No players may try out or play outside of their grade level with the exception of 2nd graders who would like to play at the 3rd grade level.
Can I play up?
2nd graders who are skilled enough to play at the 3rd grade level may play up. Otherwise, players must play at their grade level.
Is there a tryout process?
There is no tryout, just an evaluation process that is optional. In an effort to create equally skilled teams, players will be invited to an evaluation where basic skills are observed for each player. No players are cut from a team. Every player who would like to play will play in the recreational program.
How are teams created?
Every player that signs up to play in the recreational program will be placed on a team. We encourage players to attend the skill evaluation so they can be placed appropriately onto a team. Once evaluations have occurred, the recreational program director creates teams.
Can I request to play with a friend?
You may indicate a friend request, but it is not guaranteed to be granted. We will do our best to accommodate!
How many players are on each team?
This depends on the amount of interested players. Typically a team would be full at 10 players to allow for adequate playing time and practice. At times there could be less or more.
How are coaches determined?
Prospective coaches indicate their interest upon registration of their players. Coaches are parent volunteers.
How many coaches could my player’s team have?
Head coaches who are determined for each team will then reach out to interested parents for assistance. A team typically will have two coaches.
What level of commitment or engagement of players should I expect?
The expectation of playing recreational basketball is less than our select program but we would like players to commit 100% to practices and games as possible. Practices can become difficult with inconsistent player attendance and growth cannot occur without time spent.
What is the playing time to expect?
Playing time expectations should be equal between all players at the recreational level. With the exception that some might play more than others due to small roster size.
What is the time commitment?
Practices begin in December. There will be two practices each week and one game every weekend (depending on holidays) January through mid March.
What is the travel commitment?
We participate in the South Metro Recreational League which includes Sherwood, Lake Oswego, Canby, and Tualatin. Games could be in any of those locations as well as in Wilsonville.
What level of play can my player expect to experience?
At the recreational level there is no back court press, no double team defense (except in the key) and an overall environment that allows all players to grow in their skills without excessive pressure.
Is there a tournament in Rec?
There is an end of season tournament that is held on the last weekend of the season. Teams will be matched against similar strength opponents (we use win-loss records and win margins). This tournament may be hosted by any of the South Metro Recreational teams.
Costs:
The fee to play recreational basketball is still being determined due to fluctuations in gym fees, uniforms, etc. for the 2024-2025 season. The fee includes a reversible jersey.
