2026 Spring Baseball (Recreation - Grades 1 - 6)

Recreation Baseball is the foundation of Oradell Little League program and is designed to be fun, instructional, and inclusive for players of all skill levels. The focus is on learning the fundamentals of baseball and softball, building confidence, and fostering a love for the game in a positive, team-first environment. Practices and games emphasize player development, sportsmanship, and fair play, with equal opportunity for participation.

Recreation divisions are grouped by grade level, allowing players to compete alongside their peers in an age-appropriate setting. This differs from our Travel programs, which are organized by Little League age and involves a higher level of competition and commitment. Rec players have the option to enroll by either grade or age but are encouraged to play by the appropriate age set forth by the official Little League Organization and can be found here -League Age Determination - Little League

Rec baseball runs from early April to mid-June. Games and practices are local, either in town or neighboring communities and occur 2-3 days per week. Players of all ability levels are encouraged to participate and teams are comprised of varying ability levels. OLL will work towards maintaining a fair and competitive balance across teams within each age group.

Participation in the rec program is required for players to be eligible to participate in the travel program and district tournaments. (The only exception to this is the 13u & 14u levels where players may play on a travel team without participating on a rec team.) The goal of 13 & 14U teams is to prepare the player for high school ball.

Fees collected are used for team uniforms, field usage and maintenance, insurance, equipment, and umpires.

Divisions are:
Farm League - Grades 1 & 2
National League - Grades 3 & 4
American League - Grades 5 & 6

2026 Spring & Summer Baseball - Travel

The goal of Oradell Travel Baseball is to provide an elevated developmental program for any child who has expressed more than a baseline interest in the game and has demonstrated an enthusiasm for the game. The Travel program is meant to develop a participants skillset as well as to provide a more competitive experience for its participants. It is OLL’s aim to provide placement for any child looking for more development beyond what is offered in the Rec program. OLL and its volunteer coaches must acknowledge that participants may develop at different speeds within each age group, and the Travel program endeavors to work with its coaches to address the needs of all eligible participants. The implementation of the Travel mission statement may differ depending on age, collective team skill level and number of eligible participants.

Seasons, Expectations, and Fees
  • Very committed baseball players are encouraged to participate in the travel league and the emphasis of travel is on learning and improving skills in a very competitive environment against the most competitive players and teams in other towns. Playing time may not be equal, as games will be played competitively.
  • OLL Travel Baseball runs from early April through the end of July and teams are entered into leagues and tournaments including but not limited to NEBAS, NJSBL, USABL, Maywood Summer Slam, and Districts. From April until mid June players should expect 1-2 practices per week and 8-10 games mostly on the weekends. From late June through the end of July players should expect 2-3 league games and practices mostly on weekdays but some may also occur on summer weekends. USABL and Maywood Summer Slam Tournaments occur mostly on weekends. District tournaments occur in June and July and these games can occur on weekdays or weekends. OLL reserves the right to recommend and/or mandate season formats on a year by year, age by age basis.
  • To the extent interest within each age group justifies, a Fall travel season will be offered. A Fall season runs September through early November, with 1-2 practices per week and 8-10 games mostly on the weekends. Travel Baseball players are encouraged to play Fallball, but it is not mandatory.
  • Travel players from the prior calendar year’s rosters are encouraged to participate in indoor winter training, which takes place January-March. Training may be offered in the Fall as well, subject to interest..
  • Travel associated games are played at "Home" and "Away" sites. Home games are in Oradell and Away games are played in surrounding towns, typically in Bergen County, with the potential for further travel especially for any tournaments in scope. Players are expected to attend most, if not all, games and practices.
  • Travel players must play according to the appropriate age guidelines set forth by the Official Little League Organization and can be found here -League Age Determination - Little League
  • Fees collected are used for field maintenance and improvements, league and tournament entry fees, insurance, equipment, umpires, professional instruction, training facilities & related programs and outside evaluations (if necessary).
  • Participation in the rec program is required for players to be eligible to participate in the travel program and district tournaments. (The only exception to this is the 13u & 14u levels where players may play on a travel team without participating on a rec team.) The goal of 13 & 14U teams is to prepare the player for high school ball.

Evaluations & Team Formation for Travel Baseball
7U-9U
  • Travel baseball programs start at 7U through the NEBAS Coach Pitch program. Any players who have exhibited a strong interest in the game are encouraged to join as early as age 7, regardless of grade level.
  • All interested players will be provided a roster spot for 7U- 9U levels. In the event that there are more than 12 interested players for any age group, multiple travel teams will be formed within the age group of equal size and ability. Drafts will be employed to form the teams, coordinated by the commissioner and approved by the Executive Board of OLL.
  • There are no cuts at these age levels; however, there is the potential for evaluations to be held for the formation of District Tournament rosters at the 8U and/or 9U levels, if there are District imposed roster limitations.
  • In circumstances where there are more than 12 players, but less than 20 players (not enough for 2 teams), the President, Vice President, Age Level Commissioner, and Player Agent will meet to determine team formation which may include several potential scenarios varying from PODS (rotations of players within the team), possible placement of players on a higher level team if there are available spots to do so, or one team going into multiple leagues. The Age Level Commissioner will inform the Head Coach of the team formation and this could vary depending on registration numbers
  • At the 9U level, if there are more than 12 interested players and enough players for 2 teams (20 players) evaluations will occur in either March or May to determine the spring/summer league and district teams. Teams will be in place for the year and evaluations will occur annually in March or May. If at any point there are not enough registered players to maintain separate teams, teams may be combined.

10U-14U
At these levels, to the extent interest justifies, MANDATORY evaluations may occur early in the calendar year to evaluate and place the players for the subsequent seasons.
  • Teams will generally consist of a minimum of 10 players and a maximum of 12. When there are enough players for 2 teams, Competitive and Developmental teams will be formed and placed into the appropriate leagues.
  •  Team placements are FINAL, and OLL wants to reiterate the developmental value of offering different levels of competitive baseball. A child’s placement will be RESET at the start of every calendar year to ensure all participants are given a FAIR opportunity to develop and be placed in accordance with their current skillset. Please see below for further information on the annual evaluation process
  • While team placement is NOT guaranteed, Every effort will be made to offer a developmental or alternative team, including consideration of combined age groups or collaboration with nearby towns when appropriate.
  • If registration numbers do not support multiple teams, and to the extent there are more than 12 players seeking the travel experience, some players may be designated as Alternates. Alternates are considered members of the team and travel program. An alternate is expected to attend team practices and training, where they will receive the same level of coaching and instruction as primary rostered player. Being an Alternate is an opportunity to elevate their development. Travel coaches will be mandated to add an Alternate(s) in their discretion to a game roster in the event 10 or fewer primary roster players are not available.

Evaluation Process
Evaluations will occur yearly, typically early in the calendar year. The Board will obtain independent, outside evaluators, and their skill assessments will be performed with anonymity. Evaluations may also include in-game assessments with input from prior and existing coaches when applicable, to ensure thoughtful and accurate player placement. Coaches will NOT be allowed to provide input on their respective child.

The outcomes of the evaluations will be reviewed with the President, Vice President, Age Level Commissioner and player agent. The evaluator’s feedback on an individual child will be shared at the request of their family. Team placements will be final and any concerns should be directed to the Player Agent and Age Level Commissioner who will discuss the issues with the executive board. Coaches will be assigned after team placements are made and will be contacted by the respective Commissioner who will assign the Coaches to the team(s). There will be a maximum of 3 Coaches assigned per team, to be consistent with Little League guidelines.

In addition to the purpose of team placement, evaluation feedback should be used by the assigned coaching staff to address individual player development needs.

Coaches
Coaches are typically volunteers from the community(i.e. parents); however, OLL may explore the option of hiring outside professional staff should the circumstance warrant for a particular Travel age group. ALL Coaches are to adhere to the Coaching Code of Conduct in order to assist OLL of adhering to its Mission Statements. Failure to do so may result in OLL removing a Coach from their position.

Summary -The above mentioned is a general guide and scope for all levels of OLL baseball. The board reserves the right to implement modifications in the future if circumstances warrant. All teams are to be approved at the highest level of the Executive Board.
