Level 4 is designed for swimming stroke improvement. Participants who have successfully completed Levels 1, 2, and 3 will gain confidence during swim lessons, improve their stroke, and gain additional aquatic skills.
Skills gained in Level 1: Safely entering and exiting water. Blowing bubbles. Bobbing. Opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects. Gliding. Back float. Rolling from front to back and back to front. Arm and hand treading actions and leg actions (in chest-deep water).
Skills gained in Level 2: Enter and exit water using ladder, steps or side (from chest-deep water). Fully submerge and hold breath. 10 seconds Bobbing. Opening eyes underwater and retrieving submerged objects (in chest-deep water). Rotary breathing. Front glide. Floating in a face-down position. Front, jellyfish, and tuck floating. Recovering from front and back float or glide to a vertical position. Back glide and back float. Rolling. Changing direction of travel while swimming. Treading water. Combined arm and leg actions on front. Finning arm action on back. Combined arm and leg actions on back.
Skills gained in Level 3: Entering water by jumping from the side (into deep water). Headfirst entry from the side in water at least 9 feet deep. Bobbing while moving toward safety. Rotary breathing. Survival float. Back float. Change from vertical to horizontal position on front and on back (in deep water). Treading water in deep water. Pushing off in a streamlined position on front then flutter kicking. Pushing off in a streamlined position on front then dolphin kicking. Front crawl. Elementary backstroke. Scissors kick.
Skills gained in Level 4: Headfirst entry from the side in a compact and stride positions (in water at least 9 feet deep). Swimming underwater. Feet-first surface dive, submerging completely. Survival swimming (in deep water). Front crawl, open turn, back crawl, open turn. Treading water for 2 minutes using 2 different kicks (modified scissors, modified breaststroke or rotary). Front crawl for 25 yards. Breaststroke and butterfly for 15 yards each. Push off in a streamlined position on back and flutter kick; then dolphin kick. Elementary backstroke for 25 yards. Back crawl and sidestroke for 15 yards.
*Classes are Monday through Thursday for 2 weeks (August 11-14 & August 18-21). Please bring a towel and apply sunscreen prior to the start of class.
