🥎 Fielding Face Mask Policy
Player safety is our top priority. Wiseburn Aviation Softball follows USA Softball’s strong recommendation that all players wear defensive fielding face masks during practices and games — especially for infield positions (pitcher, 1st base, and 3rd base), though masks are encouraged for all fielders.
Why Face Masks Are Important
-
Prevent serious facial injuries. Line drives and deflected balls can travel over 60 mph, even in youth divisions. A properly fitted mask can protect against broken noses, dental injuries, eye damage, and concussions.
-
Promote confidence on the field. Players who feel protected are more willing to field grounders aggressively and develop proper technique.
-
Consistency with national standards. USA Softball and many local leagues encourage or require masks as part of their broader player safety guidelines.
Risks of Not Wearing a Mask
-
Potential for severe facial trauma from line drives, bad hops, or ricochets.
-
Increased medical risk and recovery time, which can end a player’s season or cause long-term complications.
-
Emotional distress for teammates, families, and coaches if a preventable injury occurs.
Coach & Team Responsibilities
-
Encourage and model compliance. Coaches should remind players to wear masks during all defensive drills, scrimmages, and games.
-
Ensure proper fit. A mask that fits securely and allows clear vision helps players perform safely and confidently.
-
League expectation. While not mandated by USA Softball nationally, Wiseburn Aviation Softball strongly recommends that all players — particularly infielders — wear a defensive face mask. Many teams adopt this as a team rule to prioritize safety and consistency across divisions.
Face masks protect our players’ health, build confidence, and align with our league’s commitment to safety and skill development. Together, we can help every athlete play the game they love — safely and fearlessly.
