The Tennessee Tar Heels began in October 2014 as the North East Tar Heels. Coach Ronnie Russell, Jr. was determined to finish the 2014 season strong; so he put a staff together of four coaches
and formed the North East Tar Heels, a travelling team who competed in the Choo-Choo Bowl in Chattanooga, TN. The experience gave Coach Ron the idea to keep this going by starting a program of his own.
Seeking guidance, Coach Ron went to his father with the idea of running a little league program. His father, Dr. Ronnie Russell, Sr., pastor of Bethlehem UPB Church embraced the idea of his son having a program and then suggested that the Tar Heels join forces with the church and create a program that would be based out of the church. The idea was then presented to the church which was met with excitement and the partnership began.
Seven members of the church were asked to serve as a Board of Directors for the program, with Dr. Russell serving as the Program Director. The Tar Heels, with a solid foundation, move forward with the development of the program.
In order to move ahead with the season, the team must be part of a league. The Tar Heels decide to petition the Mid State Youth Football League because Coach Ron feels this league is composed of teams from the inner city and will offer competition comparable to the Tar Heels. Coach Ron dedicated to his work and committed to reaching his goal to change the lives of young athletes in the church and community.
The Tennessee Tar Heels will serve as a community sports program for the North Nashville/ Bordeaux area. The organization is committed to creating an atmosphere that is comfortable and fun for not only for our athletes, but their parents, and other organizations.
The Tennessee Tar Heels are a not for profit program. We will be obtaining 501(c)(3) status with our partner, Bethlehem UPB Church.
