My name is Gary Tenorio and I am from Santo Domingo Pueblo in New Mexico. Recently I moved back to our reservation and noticed something relatively fast. There is a lack of programming and activities for the youth of our community. I am a father and in raising my children in the nearby city of Santa Fe NM, There was never a shortage of activities to do or for them to be involved in. My wife and I volunteered through boards or coaching teams in leagues and teams they played in. Before my children were old enough to play any sport, I voluntarily coached little league baseball for a number of years and my wife always helped out as an assistant coach or team mother. We did this as a way to give back to our community and found it to be very rewarding. We got to witness these young individuals grow up to become productive members of society. I believe youth sports play a huge role in children's development. They learn so many valuable lessons and skills that will have an impact further on in their lives. Here in Santo Domingo Pueblo, we lack youth-organized sports. If any of the children in the community want to play any sport, they usually have to travel to nearby cities to play or wait for the school year to participate in their respective school's programs. This needs to change. Our children deserve to be afforded those same opportunities as their urban counterparts. In August of 2022 I came upon an article about NFL flag football. This drew my interest because flag football has never been done in our community. So began my journey in acquiring a league for Santo Domingo Pueblo. Applying for a franchise was a little intimidating and at times seemed like applying for a job. However, I stuck with it. I was successful in acquiring a flag football franchise through NFL flag. What I didn't realize at the time was that acquiring the franchise was the easy part. In the beginning, we paid out of pocket for the initial insurance cost to get this league up and running. My family looks at this as an investment for the children's future. The overall goal is to bring opportunities to the youth of our tribe and surrounding communities.
