FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

About Our Competitive Programs

Q. When are tryouts held?

A: Tryouts for AC Delray teams will be held on May 5th -16th, 2019. Players can be permitted to attend team practices prior to tryouts if they are not registered to another club, or if registered to another club they would need to either be officially "released" from their club prior to contacting us, or we must receive written permission from their Club’s Director of Coaching to attend a practice.  If you have further questions regarding practicing with a team please contact Nick Hindhaugh at [email protected].

Q:  Where are the tryouts?

A:  Tryouts will take place at Hilltoppper Stadium at Seacrest Soccer Complex, 2505 Seacrest Blvd, Delray Beach. Please check our website and hotline for weather details.  If tryouts are cancelled or delayed the Hotline will be updated accordingly.

Q.  Do I need to register for tryouts?

A:  Yes, you must register with AC Delray online prior to tryouts.  If you are unable to register please contact Nick at [email protected].

Q:  Are tryouts open to all boys & girls?

A:  Yes, tryouts for each team are open to all boys & girls of the correct age.

Q: My child is not currently registered with AC Delray. Does he/she have to attend all tryout dates?  There are other club tryouts we want to attend.

A:  The more tryout sessions you can attend the more opportunities your child has to be seen playing with the current team that will continue in the year ahead. This also gives the Coach, Director of Coaching, and Technical Staff more time to carefully evaluate your child. Every season there may be a few players who miss tryouts due to injury or relocation etc. that are added to a roster before practice officially starts.

Q:  Which team does my child tryout for?

A:   Tryout age groups.

  • U08 Birth Year 2011

  • U09 Birth Year 2010

  • U10 Birth Year 2009

  • U11 Birth Year 2008

  • U12 Birth Year 2007

  • U13 Birth Year 2006

  • U14 Birth Year 2005

  • U15 Birth Year 2004

  • U16 Birth Year 2003

  • U17 Birth Year 2002

  • U18 Birth Year 2001

  • U19 Birth Year 2000

Q.  How does a player make the team?

A:  All players must compete for roster positions. Having played for AC Delray in previous years does not guarantee you a roster spot on a team.

Q.  What is the annual registration fee if my son / daughter is selected to a team at tryouts?

A:  AC Delray is one of the least expensive Competitive Soccer Programs in the area. The annual registration fee is $1000 and there are payment plans that are fully explained during the registration process. This does not include uniform costs.

There are also discounts for families with multiple children in the program.  Financial aid is also available to those who qualify. Contact Nick Hindhaugh at [email protected].

Q:  Are there any other costs?

A:  Other costs may consist of additional tournament registration fees if the team elects to do so.  This will be discussed with the parents and coach beforehand.

Q. What do we look for in players?

A:  While tryouts vary from team to team, all coaches look for players who have the potential of becoming high-level, competitive players. Throughout the tryout, coaches assess several player qualities, including but not limited to: skill, physical ability, coachability, attitude, tactical awareness, and decision making.

Q.  What happens after the last tryout?

A:   At the conclusion of the tryouts, each coach recommends players for their roster. All coaches and trainers involved in the tryout process will meet to discuss the roster choices and then the teams are then given a final approval by the Club Director of Coaching.

Q.  How long before we know what the outcome is?

A:  Usually 7 – 14 days after the last tryout, all teams will be posted on our website.

Q.  What if a player does not get selected?

A:  All players not selected will be omitted from the team lists once they are posted to our website after tryouts. This in no way suggests that they are not quality players, or that they should give up their hopes of playing travel soccer. It simply means that the coach feels the player may not have been a suitable fit for the overall competitive level required at this time.

Q:  When does practice start?

A:  Teams begin training in early August.

Q:  What is a typical practice schedule?

A:   As part of our club commitment to the best player development, all of our U9 – U19 players will practice 2-3 nights per week. Practice schedules will be released in July and will be decided on Coach and field availability. The club will also try to take into account families with multiple players in the program.

Q:  What about games?

A:   Our teams mainly play in the 2 local leagues; South Florida United (SFUYSA), and the Palm Beach League (PBSL). As part of each player’s registration fee all league/referee fees for two league seasons per team are covered by the club. Early season (PBSL) runs from late August to early November, regular season (SFU or PBSL) runs from late October to February. Games are within the tri-county area, and are played on Saturdays or Sundays, or sometimes both. Tournament play is at the discretion of the Coach and Director of Coaching. Tournaments are typically held over holiday weekends and may involve traveling outside of the tri-county area. Tournament expenses such as meals and travel are the responsibility of the team families. Some teams may participate in elite leagues like Florida State Premier League depending on the level of the team.

Q:  Who coaches our child?

A:  Every year our coaches and technical staff are evaluated as we try to provide the best staff possible. Soccer is a game, and should always be enjoyed. We endeavor to create a positive, learning environment where each player enjoys the challenges in front of them, by providing the most knowledgeable, experienced, and qualified staff that we can. Our staff for the 2018 – 2019 season features USSF Licensed Coaches, United Soccer Coaches qualified, Current and Former College Coaches, as well as specialist trainers.
