Todd Niblo

Technical Director

Todd “Nibs” Niblo has been a successful coach in this area for going on 20 years. He has held
various positions prior to coming to Baca’s side including including Technical Director for
Churchland Soccer, the Boys and Girls DOC and Vice President of that organization over his
tenure there, Senior Boys Director of Coaching FC United, U-16-U18 Boys Academy for VB City
FC summer program and the Assistant Coach for the VB City Men’s U20 and U-23 teams..
Todd holds the USSF “B” License, NSCAA Director of Coaching, UEFA Level 2, NSCAA
National Youth, NSCAA Advanced National, Premier and Goalkeeping Licenses from both the
USSF and NSCAA (United Soccer Coaches).
Todd has been involved at the club level of youth soccer from recreational player development,
cultivation of a player development model and the ADP Advanced Development Program. Todd
has coached from the youngest youth levels through the U18 competitive travel soccer level. He
has participated in and been on Staff for numerous camps, and is a staff coach with the
Technical Training Academy. His teams have been well respected throughout the state as
Quarter Finalist, Semi Finalist and Finalist showings; as well as, competing in Region 1 and
EDP (Eastern Development Program) leagues, successive years in the Top 5 in Virginia and
Top 20 national rankings.
Nibs’ coaching philosophy is “to make a new mistake”, players make so many decisions during
a match, we know they will make mistakes. What is important is that we understand the
mistake, work to correct it and make a different one the next time. It shows personal growth on
or off the pitch.  While many of these players will compete at comparatively high levels they will
absolutely need to compete in their professional lives someday soon. Much of what they learn
with us, will help them achieve their goals.
I think sports gave me the first place where l could feel really comfortable in my own skin. I think
that’s true for a lot of athletes—sports gives you a part of your life where you can work at
something and you look in the mirror and you like that person, you know what that person can
do when you push through those barriers.
Players that do this and gain that confidence, become people that push through with
confidence, I want my players to have that advantage.

Gene Gasparini

Coach Gene Gasparini has been a successful coach in this area for just over 25 years. Coach Gasparini holds the USSF “B” License, NSCAA  Advanced National Diploma, NSCAA National Youth and Goalkeeping Licensure from the  NSCAA (now United Soccer Coaches). Coach Gasparini has been involved at the club level of youth soccer from recreational player development through the travel levels. Gene began his coaching career and stayed at Churchland Soccer primarily, he coached with Virginia Legacy, FC United, WBHS junior varsity and is the current Western Branch High School varsity Boy’s coach where he has been for the past few years. Coach Gasparini joined a number of his former staff mates last season with GBSA.Gene has worked to develop players of all ages and has worked successfully with competitive girls and boys teams over the years frequently taking them from average level players to very good players in a comparatively short amount of time. While no player develops overnight, his approach to player development works well and has for many years. While Coach Gene has great passion for the sport and the knowledge to make the best players better he often seeks to ply his skills at working with lower level players and building them into not only better players but players who understand the reason why they make the decisions they do on the pitch. His players once under his instruction show real progress in the fundamentals and much broader understanding of the game.Gene has been happily married for 35 years to wife Jackie who has been in soccer for just as long, two boys and now grandchildren keeping them on the move. GBSA is pleased to have Coach Gene as a part of its talented staff.

Bryan Mackey

Bryan Mackey, I grew in Westfield, NJ. I have been coaching since 1987 my Freshmen year of college. I have coached boys and girls from the rec level to the travel level. I have been playing soccer since I was 6 years old. I started out just like all the kids on this team, as I progressed through middle and high school when I began to play club or what is now called Travel. The first Travel coach that I played for when I was fourteen-years-old was a coach that spoke very little English. But, he always knew how to get his points across to the team. I played for a High School State Championship in 1985 and lost and again in1986. I missed a shot from about 8 yards out in 1985 and we lost. But, we came back the next year to win the Championship. My Club team won the State Championship in the Spring of 1986 and we went undefeated. I also played for another Club team that won a State Championship in 1992 and we also were undefeated. After I graduated from high school, I tried out for and walked on to the Campbell University soccer team and was able to play for 2 seasons before leaving school due to injury.
In the Spring of 1987 is when I began coaching. I assistant coached a U-10 and was the Head Coach of a U-14 team in Buies Creek, NC. Both teams won the Championship in their division. That same year I also coached at the Campbell University soccer Camp.
I didn’t coach again until my son was 4 years and he began his soccer career. I coached several more time for Norfolk United and Assistant Coached for my son’s Hampton Roads Striker team. My son and I coached an undefeated Norfolk United rec team and the next season an Undefeated Interleague Championship team.
The reason that I mentioned those wins more than loses, was because in the end those are the games that we remember the most. We may not win every game and I hope that we don’t. It makes it harder to find our weaknesses if we don’t lose a game.  I will be looking at each player in games and in practice to see how and where I can help them to become better players. My main goal as a coach is to focus on the player and to help them to improve their individual game. Then the players can grow as team after that. I will teach and guide the player to go as far as they want to go.
I hope to achieve that every player on the team is better at the end of the season than they are at the beginning of the season. I also want to foster a lifelong love of soccer just like I have to this day. I hope that in 30 years that they are still playing, coaching, watching and enjoying the game as much as I do today.
I want to develop players as one team and as individual players. But, I also want to have fun. I am the biggest kid out there. So, that means that I want to have fun with the team at practice as well as learn. We will play games that they enjoy, but they will be learning at the same time.
Thank you for allowing me to coach your child and I will do my best so that we all have a great season.
