We anticipate fielding teams for 8U-18U players in the Charles River League. Interest levels will dictate the levels at which we enter teams. It is possible that 8U and 14U players, in particular, will play with older players.  

Charles River League: Teams typically play doubleheaders against other towns on Sunday mornings. The Charles River teams will play games 9/7, 9/14, 9/21, 9/28,10/5 and 10/19.   Games are typically more competitive than the NGS Rec games, but not as competitive as tournaments. Playing in the Charles River League is a fun opportunity to continue to develop softball skills, whether your player spent the summer playing tournaments or enjoyed Rec and wants more competition. 

Tournaments: We will likely enter teams in tournaments at the 12U and 14U level, with the possibility of entering teams at other levels.  We will select tournaments that will challenge our teams. Families should plan on spending all day Saturday and Sunday on softball fields.

Roster formation: Team placement will be determined based on past performance, coachability, attitude, and coach input.

Costs: $225 for 8U, 10U, and 12U. $325 for 14U and 16U/18U.  There will be additional costs for tournament teams which we will share when the plans firm up. 14/16/18U registration is free -- athletes will be charged only once they are placed on a team.

What age group are we? The USA softball rules (chart here) align with Massachusetts public school years. Below 4th grade will be 8U, 4th and 5th grade are 10U, 6th and 7th grade are 12U, etc.

Newton Girls Softball is hosting a 2-day clinic for new and beginner pitchers led by Emily Sargent—owner of Sargent Softball, head coach of the 16U Newton Panthers, and the force behind the new Ace of Diamonds training facility in Needham.

This fun, supportive clinic is perfect for younger players ready to take the mound and build a strong foundation in fastpitch pitching.

Who: Softball players in grades 2–5

Dates: Saturdays, September 6 & September 13

Rainout Dates: Sunday, September 7 and Sunday, September 14

Time: 9:00–10:00 AM

Location: Emerson Playground Field

Cost: $30 total for both sessions (non-refundable)

What to Bring: A catcher (a parent, older sibling, or friend)

Note: All catchers under 18 must wear a fielder’s or catching mask.

Newton Girls Softball will again be offering pitching clinics this winter. There will be three six-week sessions on Sunday evenings at the West Newton YMCA. Pitchers will be grouped in classes of seven according to experience and ability.

We have limited availability for these sessions. It will be first-come first-served with a waiting list. ALL three sessions are now open and you can sign up for one, two, or all three sessions.

DATES:

- SESSION 1: Sept 28, Oct 5, 19, 26; Nov 2, 9

- SESSION 2: Nov, 16, 23; Dec 7, 21; Jan: 4, 11

- SESSION3: Jan 25, Feb 1, 22; Mar 1, 8, 15

Snow Days if necessary: March 22, 29

WHEN/WHERE: 6 or 7 pm at the West Suburban YMCA. Your time slot will be determined by what class your child is in.

WHO: The teachers will be Brandice and Kate Condon from Planet FastPitch.

CATCHERS: Your pitcher will need a catcher. Those under 18 can get in some extra catching practice, but they need to wear at least a catcher’s helmet. If your child needs a catcher, talk to us.

COST: $295 per player per six-week session.

For Sessions 2 and 3, only, you can make a $50 non-refundable deposit if you're not ready to commit, but want to guarantee your slot. Payment in full is due three weeks prior to the first Sunday of that session.

MORE ABOUT THE COSTS: The YMCA and PFP set their rates. NGS does not. We collect the money and pass it along – we cannot offer refunds, but you can find somebody to “buy” your slot less the deposit fee if your plans change. NGS contributes a subsidy to reduce the price and encourage more players to take pitching lessons. More good pitchers = more fun for our program. If you need help with costs, please reach out. WAIVER: Please fill our the PFP waiver for both the pitcher and catcher, even if that's a parent.
