The start of a new Little League season is just around the corner, and that means one thing: tryouts! For players ages 8 and up, tryouts are an exciting opportunity to showcase their skills and prepare for the upcoming season. Whether you’re new to Little League or a seasoned player, this blog will help you and your child feel confident and ready for tryouts.
What Are Tryouts
Tryouts are a friendly, low-pressure way for coaches to assess each player’s abilities. The goal is to ensure fair and balanced teams, giving every player the best chance to learn, grow, and enjoy the game.
Who Needs to Attend Tryouts
- Players Ages 8 and Up: Attendance at tryouts is required for players playing in the Minor and Major divisions for proper team placement, including returning players.
- 10 am: 10 - 12 yr olds
- 11:30 am: 8 - 9 yr olds
- Players Ages 4-7: No tryouts needed! These players are placed on teams by league staff and will be notified of their team by February 7th.

What to Bring to Tryouts
Here’s a quick checklist to help your child feel prepared:
- Glove: The most essential piece of equipment!
- Cleats: Make sure they’re comfortable and broken in.
- Bat (Optional): While we’ll have bats available, bringing your own ensures a good fit.
- Water Bottle: Stay hydrated!
- Comfortable Athletic Wear: A baseball hat is a bonus!
What Happens During Tryouts
Players will rotate through a series of drills to showcase different skills:
- Fielding: Ground balls, pop flies, and throws.
- Hitting: Batting off a tee or live pitching (depending on the division).
- Throwing: Accuracy and arm strength.
- Running: Timed sprints to assess speed.
Coaches will observe and take notes, but don’t worry—this is a friendly environment designed to encourage young athletes!
Tips for a Successful Tryout
- Practice Beforehand: Spend time throwing, catching, and hitting in the days leading up to tryouts.
- Stay Positive: Encourage your child to focus on effort, not perfection.
- Arrive Early: Check in and warm up to ease any nerves.
- Have Fun: Remind your child that tryouts are just the first step in an exciting season!
