CHYAA REC Basketball Frequently Asked Questions

Who can play in the CHYAA Rec Basketball League?

CHYAA Rec Basketball program is open to any child ages 5 through 18(as of September 1st). You do not have to live in the Collins Hill cluster nor Gwinnet County to participate. There is an additional out of County fee of $90 per player for any child that does not reside in Gwinnett County.

Do I need experience to play?

No, CHYAA Basketball offers the opportunity to learn and play for players of all levels. Our league rules provide that teams are equally divided with experienced and beginning players and ensures that each player participated substantially in every game. CHYAA coaches are tasked with teaching fundamentals and teamwork to all players.

How much does it cost this season?

$300.00 all ages

(includes new uniform, spirit fee and banquet)

We have partnered with the Atlanta Hawks and player must purchase new uniform for all perks given by the Hawks this season

How do I register my child?

All players must be registered online. Registration will open in September 2025. All payments online are with credit card (a processing fee does apply).  Please use link below to register:

What are the age groups?

5-6 (6U) Coed

7/8 (8U) Boys and Girls

9/10 (10U) Boys and Girls

11/12U Boys

13/14 (14U) Boys

When are evaluations and who must attend?

There are no evaluations for 6u Coed.

Evaluations will be held for ages groups 8U through 18U. The time is TBD.  Please note that this is not tryout, but all players must attend so their skill set can be assessed fairly.

When are practices, locations, what days and how long are they?

Practices are one hour long and twice per week. Days may vary depending on the gym times that are available. Practices will be held at a cluster school's gym.

When are games, locations, what days, and how long are they?

Games will begin in early December. Homes games will be played at our cluster school gyms. Away games will be played at the surrounding Rec program gyms. Games are typically held on Thursday or Friday evenings and Saturdays. The games are usually an hour long unless a game goes into overtime.

How many players can be on a team?

Due to the rule that all players must play 2 quarters, the teams are limited to 10 players per team. The minimum per team is 7.

What if I want my child to play up an age group?

It is recommended that the player play within their appropriate age group. We do understand that there may be a player who is more advanced and playing up would be a benefit to their skill set. Please contact the Director on this as is approved on a case-by-case basis and a player can only play up one age group.

What if my player makes the High school, Middle School or GBL team and I already registered?

If your player makes the teams that are listed above, they can receive refund if they are able to show proof that they made the team. CHYAA has a strict refund policy, and all refunds will need to be approved by Executive Board.

How can my player make the County All Stars?

A player would need to be nominated for All Stars by their coach in December. Selections will be held in early January.

Are there any opportunities to coach or otherwise contribute as a parent?

Yes. CHYAA operated completely on adult volunteer participation and must pass background check. If a parent desires to be a coach, please email [email protected]

GYBA Travel Basketball Information

What is Collins Hill GYBA Travel Basketball?

The Collins Hill GYBA Travel League Basketball program is a highly competitive youth basketball program. The Collins Hill Travel program strives to develop boys and girls in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grades with advanced basketball skills to compete against the GBL programs from other Gwinnett School Clusters. The goals of the travel program are to prepare players for more advanced competition in the future. Players interested in playing on a Travel Team should be willing to commit to a more intense practice and game schedule.

Playing time is not guaranteed, it is earned at the coach’s discretion for all players. Athletes desiring a league where they are guaranteed playing time should register for Collins Hill Recreation Basketball League.

How much does it cost?
The CHYAA Travel Registration Fee is $440.00 for each player. The registration fee also includes uniform fee (reversible jersey and shorts), travel team registration fees, practice gym rental and referees. Additional cost, at team discretion, may apply for items such as uniform accessories, trophies, etc. There are no multi-player discounts and no scholarships available for Travel League Basketball. Families interested in those arrangements must register their athlete for CHYAA Recreation Basketball League. There is a gate fee at each games site hosting games for all spectators and this fee is established by the league board.

How do I register for GYBA Travel Basketball?
Players DO NOT pay registration fees prior to trying out for CHYAA GYBA Travel Basketball.  Players wanting to tryout must arrive to tryouts 15 minutes early to check-in providing player’s name, school, grade level and all parent contact information (email and phone numbers).

Within one (1) weeks of the teams being selected by the Head Coaches, a mandatory travel team meeting will be held where all players and parents/guardians will take care of the following items:

-Register for travel basketball and Pay registration Fees of $440.00 to CHYAA

- Fitted for Uniform

- Provide a Birth Certificate and Current Report Card (GCPS Parent Portal Printout; no screenshots accepted)

When are tryouts?
There will be an open tryout session for each grade. Tryouts will be held in September, and the dates will be posted on the CHYAA website. All prospective players are expected to attend all tryout sessions. Please make sure to arrive fifteen (15) minutes early for check in, obtain a name tag, and be ready to begin at the respective time for the players grade level tryout.

What are the eligibility requirements?
To be eligible to play on a Collins Hill Travel team, all players must meet the following criteria:

1. Must be currently enrolled in a Collins Cluster school. Players attending private school must live within the geographic boundaries of the Collins Hill Cluster. ** If your cluster does not have GYBA, then your player will be eligible to play with Collins Hill**

2. Teams are fielded for Boys and Girls at the 3rd-4th, 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade levels. Players must try out for the team at their grade level. The general rule for playing up is only when no team exists for their grade level may a player "play-up" at the next grade level. Any players playing up must be approved by the CHYAA Basketball Director. Availability of teams for each grade level is based on participation levels and may result in CHYAA not fielding teams for certain grades.

3. Players must meet the same academic eligibility requirements as the Middle School 8th Grade teams.
Note: CHYAA REC Basketball is a league for any athlete from Kindergarten through their Senior year of High School who do not meet these eligibility requirements.

What if my child attends a school not in the Collins Hill District?
The Travel League restricts eligibility for teams based on High School Clusters; therefore, individuals wishing to play in the Travel League who live in the Collins Hill Cluster must play Travel for Collins Hill Athletic Association.  If a player attends a private school or is home-schooled while living in the Collins Hill Cluster, he/she is eligible to participate in the Collins Hill Travel Program by providing proof of residence. Alternatively, the CHYAA Rec Basketball League is open to all students regardless of school or residence.

When do Collins Hill Travel practices begin?
The start of practices will vary by team, but in most cases, teams will begin practicing at least once per week beginning in October.

After the season begins, teams will practice a minimum of 2 times per week and play 2 games each weekend (one Saturday, one Sunday.) GYBA Travel Basketball is a big commitment of time by the player and their family! Players are expected to attend every practice and game (and arrive early to each.)

Where do the Travel teams practice / play?

Practice locations are TBA at this time and will be updated in September. There may be an occasion where the teams will travel to another location because of some available gym time or for a scrimmage against another team. The Head Coach of each team will coordinate this and communicate with as much advanced notice as possible.

All games are played in Gwinnett County at either Suwanee Sports Academy or several participating high school gyms in Gwinnett County.
