LYSC G2 Rules of Play
G2 (U8) soccer is an instructional form of soccer whose purpose is to provide a fun & competitive atmosphere and a positive playing experience for the children participating. Sessions consist of approximately 15-20 minutes of practice and 50 minutes of an intra-league game (two, 25-minute halves).
The G2 age group shall play 5 vs. 5 including a goalie (4 + 1 GK). All teams (including coaches and players) must remain on one side of the soccer field. Coaches will be allowed to enter the field space early in the season, when necessary, to provide teaching assistance (for throw-ins, corner kicks and goal kicks especially), but should not remain on the field longer than necessary. Spectators, including families, shall remain on the opposite side of the field. A size 3 soccer ball will be used.
RULES OF PLAY:
* Throw-ins:
- Throw-ins will be used to restart play after the ball fully crosses the sideline (touchline). The player will throw the ball using two hands and bringing the ball behind their head, while keeping 2 feet on the ground when the ball is released. A player who takes a throw-in or a kick-off improperly will be given an additional try.
* Goal Kicks:
- The ball shall be placed within two yards of the goal (two big steps) in any direction.
- All opponents must be behind midfield until the ball is played.
* Corner Kicks:
- The ball must be placed within 1 yard of the corner, nearest to the point where the ball crossed the endline (goal line).
- Opponents must remain at least 5 yards from the ball until the ball is in play.
* Free Kicks: May be awarded for intentional handballs and rough play.
- All free kicks are INDIRECT (at the G2 level), meaning another player on the field needs to touch the ball after it has been kicked, before a goal can be scored (this can be a teammate, or an opponent).
- Opponents must be 5 yards (5 big steps) from the ball until it is kicked.
- No direct penalty kicks.
* Goalies may not punt the ball. They must restart play by throwing the ball, or kicking the ball from the ground (if they place the ball on the ground after picking it up, it is a live ball and an opponent is permitted to steal the ball).
* No offsides.
* No slide-tackling. Players shall not “go to ground” in an attempt to stop, or steal the ball from an opponent.
* No wearing jewelry.
