Coaches Code of Conduct

The following code of conduct shall apply to all people who coach or hold a responsible position at MHAA. The conduct where applied to the coach also applies to the assistant coaches, managers, team parents, etc.

The primary functions of a coach are to teach the fundamentals of the particular sport and install the character of good sportsmanship.  When these two functions have been accomplished, the program has been successful.

Winning, while an admirable accomplishment, shall never supersede participation.  In other words, to have played and lost is far more important than to have won and never played at all.

In keeping with these ultimate goals, it is the coach’s responsibility to at all times set a good example.  Coaches represent our association at all times.  Their actions and activities reflect on every member of this association.  Their conduct and standing in the community must be above reproach and free from any moral turpitude.  Their moral standards must be those which we desire our children to associate with, aspire to and maintain.

Coaches must also possess knowledge of the sport adequately enough to be passed on.  Each coach must demonstrate ability and the methodology to transfer this knowledge.  Each coach must radiate that positive attitude that makes children want to learn.

When these most important qualities have been met in the opinion of the commissioner and the board, the prospect is acceptable to be a coach.  Each coach must, however, follow these additional codes of conduct:

1. Each coach serves at the pleasure of the Board of Directors.  A coach may be removed at any time with or without cause.  The commissioner may suspend a coach at any time the commissioner deems justified, pending further action by the Board.

2. The use of vulgarity, profanity, racial slurs, demeaning comments and improper gestures are prohibited in the presence of team members, at any team functions.

3. A coach shall not at any time derogatorily discuss another player, coach, parent, official or team in the presence of a team member.

4. Abusive language and intimidating actions with children, parents or officials will not be tolerated.  Touching or grabbing any child, official or parent, in any manner other than positive reinforcement is prohibited.  Severely reprimanding anyone, even one’s child is prohibited.

5. Coaches and assistants must be properly attired when attending practice, games or any team functions.  Proper dress code demands a shirt, slacks or shorts and shoes at all times.

6. The use of alcohol and/or drugs is prohibited on the playing fields at all times.

7. The use of tobacco is prohibited on or around the playing fields at all time.

8. Each coach is responsible for the action of himself or herself, his or her team, his or her assistants and parents at all time.

9. It is understood that all coaches, assistants and team members conduct themselves as ladies and gentlemen both on and off the playing field.

10. When a coach makes a commitment to the children of this association to coach a team, he or she is expected to participate in all functions including coaches meetings, games, practices and team banquets.

11. Infractions of any of the Coaches Code of Ethics will result in the following actions:
1st Infraction will result in a One Game Suspension.
2nd Infraction will result in being removed from the coaching position.
