Over the past few years, Babe Ruth League, Inc. in conjunction with USA Baseball and it’s affiliated members have been researching and studying the age determination dates for youth baseball and softball. A major issue facing our sport today is the decline in player participation after the 10 year old age bracket. The result of the research shows that an initial step in reversing this trend would be to change the age cutoff date from July 31st to April 30th. The DVAA instituted the new age determination date as of the 2006 season. Division eligibility is determined by the child’s age as of April 30 of the current year.
BASEBALL:
Intro the Tball: Children ages 3 1/2 to 4 1/2. This group practices once a week working on learning about the game and having fun while covering the basics.
T-ball: Children ages 5 and 6 (grades PK-K) Introduces players to the game of baseball. Focuses on the basics, such as hitting off the tee, running the bases, and learning the rules of the game. Games are played twice a week.
Coach Pitch: Children ages 7 and 8 (grades 1st-2nd). This is instructional level baseball with a combination of kid pitch and coach pitch. Focuses on honing the players fielding, throwing, and catching skills in an attempt to prepare the player for the next level. Games are played twice a week.
Minor’s: Players ages 9 and 10 (grades 3rd- 4th) The first year of pitching and keeping score. Stealing after the ball passes the plate adds to the excitement of playing "real" baseball. Players play on a 46/60 field. Games are played twice a week.
Major’s: Players ages 11 and 12 (grades 5th- 6th) Players play on a 50/70 field. Stealing at will and balks become part of the game as players continue to work on their skills. Games are played twice a week.
Teener’s: Players ages 13 to 14 (grades 7th-8th) Players play on a full size field (60/90), and play a 7 inning game. Teams play in the Bushkill Valley Baseball League in PA.
SOFTBALL:
Softball Ponies- grades k/1/2
Softball Biddys- grades 3/4
Softball Midgets- grades 5/6
Softball Juniors- grades 7/8
NOTE: The ages and grades listed above will cover the majority of players. We understand that a small percentage of players have the ability to play at a level above their designated age group. Parents desiring their children to "play-up" must complete a DVAA Parental Release Form. Release forms will be available at registration or by clicking the link above.
