Big Dawg Baseball Camp

Verona Little League is happy to host Drew Richard's Big Dawg Baseball Camp on April 26th from 9:30 - 11:30 am at the Verona Little League Complex. It is a 2-hour camp for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders and costs $50. VLL volunteer coaches are welcome to join their signed up child as a volunteer and learner. In case of inclement weather, we will relocate to a held VASD gym. Both baseball and softball players in this age range are welcome to attend.

More details on his methodology are in this video and in the message below from Drew:
--------------------------------------------------------------
My name is Drew Richard, and this is the Big Dawg Baseball/Softball Camps! The purpose of this camp is very simple. To spark the love of baseball/softball for these players! I have done hundreds of camps/clinics/practices/lessons you name it! I always feel like when the camp is done, hitters don't really remember the drills or mechanics they went over... but they do remember how they felt. Did they have fun? Did they enjoy it or were they just doing a bunch of drills and mechanic work. I do think mechanics are very important! But HOW you learn them makes all the difference. If you watch any of my social media videos(Over 400,000 Subscribers/Followers, Instagram: d.r.hitting) you will notice something important. I want to make sure every hitter is having fun while they are learning. That's what we will do here!

  • Banana Ball Games
  • Wiffle Ball Games
  • Fun/Impactful Stories
  • Instructional Break

The camp will start out with a fun way for everyone to get to know each other! Whether it be finding out their favorite food or TV show or what's their best nickname, I want to make sure every kid can be remembered and feel cared for! After we establish this we will go right into BIG DAWG

Big Dawg is about being a confident hitter! We don't make mistakes like a kitty cat, we make mistakes like a BIG DAWG! This will be the emphasis of the entire camp. You may be sick of barking by the end of the camp! Once we establish how we should be attacking the baseball/softball. We will jump right into the wiffle ball games and banana ball games! The volunteer coaches will be in charge of the game and making sure the hitters are Big Dawg'ing! We will rotate games and at the half hour mark we will take a short break for some Instruction! This will be talking about the mistakes I see that are common. This typically could be about their big dawg or even keeping their head down! This instruction break will give them some guidance to use during the game. The volunteer coaches now can use this for their game also! We will do this until process until the end of the camp. The camp will end with a story about hard work and determination. Encouraging them about if they have big dreams, they have to work hard to accomplish those dreams!

Once the camp is over we will finish with a half hour coaches clinic. Basically a Q&A for coaches about the camp and how they can establish this moving forward the rest of the year!

Let the Big Dawg Eat!

Division Structure and Grade Guidelines

(**based on players grade for the 2024-2025 school year)

VLL believes that in most cases it is in the best interest of our players to play in the standard Little League age-appropriate league and we may refuse special placement requests for safety, competitive balance and/or Little League compliance reasons. We want kids to play with their age and grade level peers.

If you want to discuss special placement in a league above or below your child’s grade-based league, please email your child’s name & special request to our league registrar at [email protected].

We do not currently have a program for players born after September 1, 2019. Those with birth dates after this date are considered too young for Little League baseball and should consider playing with the Verona Rec department.

As Verona Little League wants to ensure a safe and fun environment for all players, all players go through a skills assessment in early spring.  All kindergarteners will be considered for a team based on the assessment.  It isn’t a tryout but a way to make sure that the younger players are ready for league play.

Kindergartners are welcome to signup for our rookies division. If after assessments, your child is given the green light to play in our league then we also ask that a parent be willing to support or coach with the coaching team as part of your child’s participation.

League Descriptions:

Rookies: K, 1st & 2nd
Minors: 3rd & 4th
Majors: 5th
Intermediate: 6th
Juniors: 7th, 8th & 9th

VLL tournament team players should consult with their current coach on regular season league placement.
