TYA Little League Softball

TYA Little League Softball

More competitive rec softball is offered to players ages 9-16 in our Minors (10U), Majors (12U), and Seniors (16U). Each division follows separate rules for pitching distance, stealing, time limits, etc.

Players must be in the TYA LL Softball program boundary to participate in District play opportunities. See Little League Information on this page for more details.

In all divisions:

  • Seasons run from middle-to-the-end of March thru mid-June. All regular activities finish up around the same time as the end of the school year.
  • Practices are held the first couple of weeks, followed by game play against other teams in their divisions.
  • Home events are held at Bustard Rd park Fields 1, 2, or 3. All divisions will travel to other locations in District 22 for away games.
  • Weekly schedules will vary.
  • Weekday times can run from 5:30 p.m. until about 7:30-8 p.m.
  • Weekends are generally avoided, except for special events and inclement weather needs.
  • Players will be expected to arrive early for warm-ups on game days.

Minors (10U)

The Minors Division is for players ages 8-10. Player eligibility for this division is determined by Little League's League Age Calculator.

The Minors Division represents our entry level division of competition. Minor level players begin to transition from a “developmental” format of coaching and play to a more competitive format. It is the first year of player pitch.

The diamond has 60-foot base paths and a 35 foot pitching distance. Modified rules are in place for stealing.

Athletes in the Minors league are often very diverse in terms of fundamental abilities, knowledge of the game, and competitive experience. This is why we choose a “Selection Style” approach to building team rosters – enabling us to “balance” skills across all teams in the division. Prior to the start of the season, the players will participate in a "player evaluation day”.  Coaches will evaluate each girl's batting, fielding, throwing, and pitching skills (if requested). Coaches then form team rosters based on the evaluation day player ratings -- as well as general knowledge about the player from previous year's coaches.

Teams in our Minors program play the majority of their regular season games against "in-house" teams, while a few games are played on the road against nearby towns.  This helps to build a more competitive spirit amongst the teams. It also helps players prepare for the next level of play where traditionally half of the season is played on the road.

Scores and team standings are recorded at the Minors level. A tournament or playoff is held at the end of the season to determine a division champion.

Minors is the youngest division where players are eligible to play on the team of "All Stars" that will compete in the Little League District 22 tournament at the end of June. For more information, click here to go to the Little League Pennsylvania site: https://padistrict22ll.website.siplay.com/

Additional opportunities for elevated play in an in-house All Star game and Sunday Select may be available as well.

Most Minors teams play their home games at Field B1 at Bustard Park.

Equipment Required: All players need a fielding mask, glove, bat, and a helmet.

Weekly Schedule: Weekly schedule will vary. Home events and practices held at Bustard Rd Park. Some travel to District 22 fields for away games may be required.

Additional Events: Opening Day, Skills Competition Day, (possible) in-house All-Star game, District Team (team selected by invite-only tryout).

Majors (12U)

The Majors Division is for players ages 10-12. Player eligibility for this division is determined by Little League's League Age Calculator.

In the Majors, the level of competition goes up another notch. An emphasis is placed on further developing the player's skills, both athletically and socially, with a strong emphasis on developing a complete knowledge of the game. The girls handle all the pitching at this level. Games are umpired by a Little League USA/ASA (Amateur Softball Association) sanctioned-official.

The diamond has 60-foot base paths and a 40 foot pitching distance. Standard softball rules are in place.

Like the Minors League, girls may participate in a "Player Evaluation Day” before the start of the season. The coaches will evaluate each girl's batting, fielding, throwing and, if requested, pitching skills. Coaches will then form team rosters based on the evaluation day player ratings, as well as general knowledge about the player from previous year's coaches. A "Selection Style” approach is used to ensure a balance of player skills across all teams within the division.

Scores and standings are kept, and an end-of-the-season tournament or playoff session is scheduled to crown a division champion. Most Majors home games are played at Field Number 3 at Bustard Park. There will also be "away" games that will require some travel. 10-12 regular season games are held along with additional playoff games.

A special tryout is held in late May to pick an "All-Stars" team to represent TYA in the Pennsylvania District 22 Little League Tournament held in late June.

Additional opportunities for elevated play in an in-house All Star game and Sunday Select may be available as well.

Seniors (16U)

The Seniors Division is for players ages 13-16. Player eligibility for this division is determined by Little League's League Age Calculator.

The Senior League Softball Division begins with indoor training in February and March. The regular season runs from April to May; in late May, tryouts are held for District team play (which occurs in June). Teams play 2-3 times a week, Monday through Saturday. All games are held at Bustard Park.

Seniors 16U also uses a 60-foot diamond with a pitching distance of 43 feet.

One team has the opportunity to play in the Senior League Softball World Series. This Tournament Team (or “All Stars”) would be chosen from this division and/or from the Junior League Softball divisions. The International Tournament culminates in the Senior League Softball World Series, which features teams from around the world. All expenses (travel, meals and housing) for teams advancing to the World Series are paid by Little League International.
