- GRADE LEVEL: High School Sports are for students in 9th-12th grade.
- TIME COMMITMENT: Each sport usually meets 3 times per week for about 2 hours each time (so 3 practices per week, or 2 practices and 1 game, or 2 games and 1 practice, etc.).
- EXPERIENCE: No prior sports experience is necessary to participate. However, we are a competitive program; thus individual play time in games is not equal and is determined by the coach.
- LOCATIONS: Practices and games take place at various church, school, and community center gyms and parks throughout the city. See LOCATIONS for a partial list of facilities. Locations will vary from season to season.
- PRACTICE SCHEDULES: Practice schedules will be emailed to you directly from the coaches 1-2 weeks after registration has closed. Unless listed in the sports descriptions below, schedule information is not available before you register, as schedules may vary depending upon which team your child is placed within that sport, and schedules are not known until registration has closed and teams have been assigned. Schedules are subject to change throughout the season.
- GAME SCHEDULES: Game schedules are assigned to us by the leagues in which we participate, after practices have already begun. Once games begin, practice schedules will change to accommodate games, and schedules may vary from week to week.
- REFUNDS: We do offer a refund (minus a $10-13 processing fee) if, when you receive the practice schedule, you find that you are unable to participate in our program. However, please try to be committed when you register, because we use our registration numbers to determine how many teams we will be able to form. Contact the registrar to request a refund within the first two weeks of practice at [email protected].
Sport seasons listed are approximate. Note that some sport seasons overlap. Please take this into consideration when registering one student for multiple sports. When one student has two sports that are listed for different seasons, but overlap somewhat, the sport for which the season started first is the one that should be given priority.
FALL SPORTS
HIGH SCHOOL CO-ED CROSS COUNTRY: (Late July through Mid-October)
Cross Country competes in the ACSL League. High school runs a 5K race (3.1 miles). There are no tryouts for Cross Country, but all runners need to be able to complete their respective distances without stopping by September 2nd. Runners unable to complete this task may be retained on the team, but that will be contingent upon having enough helpers to work with them. Male and female athletes in grades 5-12 attend the same practices and meets, but will compete in different divisions. Practices are usually held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings until meets begin; meets are on Saturday mornings.
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS FLAG FOOTBALL: (Late July through Late October)
We compete in the ACSL Varsity League. If there are enough participants and volunteer coaches to form more than one team, coaches determine team placement. Games are usually held at USS Bullhead Memorial Park. Practice locations vary from season to season. Cleats and mouthguards are required.
HIGH SCHOOL CO-ED SOCCER: (Late July through Mid-November)
This is a co-ed competitive outdoor sport. We usually only field one team, so spots fill up quickly - plan to register early! We aim to build a team consisting of an equal number of boy and girl athletes. We compete in the ACSL Varsity League. Pre-season skills and scrimmage practices are sometimes held throughout the summer. Full practices normally begin in mid-July to early August. Games may run from late August through mid-November.
BASKETBALL (Season depends on team placement. Please read details below.)
HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL: Season depends on team placement. JV Season is Early September through Early December. Varsity Season is Late September through Early February.
Tryouts to determine on which team players will be placed may be held in late August (if we field a JV team that year), or in September. We often field two teams. One will be the Varsity team, playing in the ACSL Varsity league which may begin in late September and run through early February. The second team may be a JV team (9th & 10th grades only), playing in the ACSL JV League (early Sept. - early Dec.), or a "Purple" team (mid-level, 9th-12th grades), which will play in the Varsity league during the varsity season.
NOTES:
Players who make the Varsity basketball team will be asked to have a high level of commitment as far as making attendance at practices and games a high priority, and working individually to improve skills. Varsity teams may also invite players to travel to optional tournaments including Regional Championships in February or National Christian Homeschool Championships in March.
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL: Season depends on team placement. JV Season is Late August through Early December. Varsity Season is October through Early March.
Tryouts to determine on which team players will be placed may be held in late August. Typically we field two or three high school boys teams. One will be the Varsity team, playing in the ACSL Varsity league which may begin in early October and run through early March. Additional teams may include a JV team (9th & 10th grades only), playing in the ACSL JV League (possibly late August - early Dec.), or a "Purple" team (mid-level, 9th-12th grades), which will play in the Varsity league during the varsity season.

SPRING SPORTS
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS & GIRLS TENNIS: (Late January through Mid-April)
We participate in the USTA High School JV/Club Tennis League, competing with local public and private high school JV teams. High School tennis matches are not co-ed, but our boys and girls teams usually practice together. We often end up forming two boys teams and two girls teams for competitive matches. The season usually consists of two practices per week, traditionally held on Monday afternoons/evenings and Friday mornings, beginning in late January. There are normally 6 matches, held once per week on Wednesday afternoons from mid-February through mid-April. The season ends with a state tournament held on a weekend in mid April, which sometimes includes Friday afternoon, plus possibly all day Saturday and Sunday morning. Practices are usually held at city tennis courts such as Zuni, Don Juan De Onate and Jerry Cline. Matches are held at various schools and city courts.
Eighth graders may be allowed to play high school tennis with coach approval if roster spots are available at the close of registration.
HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: (Early January through Early May)
Tryouts to determine which on which team players will be placed may be held in mid- to late January. Depending on registration numbers, we will likely field 1-3 teams capped around 10 players each: one to compete in the ACSL JV division consisting of 9th and 10th graders, one to compete in a mid-level division, and another to compete in the Varsity division consisting of 11th and 12th graders along with those 9th and 10th graders who qualify based on tryouts. Upperclassmen may be placed on the Varsity team but will not necessarily be given a starting position.
All high school girls are eligible to try out for the varsity starting positions. Volleyball is a highly skilled, position specific sport; thus "playing time" is determined based on a player's specific skill set and the needs of the team in each rotation. Playing time is not measured in minutes played and will not be equal.
HIGH SCHOOL BOYS VOLLEYBALL: (Early-February through Early May)
Depending on registration numbers, we may field one or two teams capped around 10 players each. Both teams usually play in the ACSL Varsity league. If there is more than one team, tryouts to determine on which team players will be placed may be held in early February.

HIGH SCHOOL CO-ED TRACK & FIELD: (Early March through Mid-May)
We compete in the ACSL League. Practices are usually held three times per week at a public school track field (historically at Eldorado HS or La Cueva HS) on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Male and female athletes in grades 5-12 all attend the same practices and meets, but they compete in different divisions. There are normally about four or five meets that are held on Saturdays in April and early May. Each athlete usually competes in 3 or 4 events at the meets. Students are allowed to give input as to which events they would most like to compete in, but the coach makes the final decison so as to best utilize everyone on the team. Events may include shot put, discus, long jump; 100m, 200m, 400m, and 800m sprints; several relay events; and 1600m and 3200m distance events.
