Field Hockey Set To Begin 2021 Campaign

GRANTHAM, Pa. – After the COVID-19 pandemic closed the doors on the 2020 season, Messiah field hockey is primed to begin its first full season since the 2019 campaign, beginning the season on the road at Dickinson College next Wednesday (9/1). The Falcons look to capture their 14th-consecutive MAC Commonwealth Championship this season while making an NCAA Tournament appearance for their 20th-straight season. With a total of 64 points and eight first-place votes, Messiah field hockey was ranked first in the annual MAC Commonwealth Preseason Coaches' Poll.

With a roster that welcomes back many returners and turns to new faces for contributions, the Messiah Falcons are primed for their 2021 competition.

See below for a preview of the 2021 season:

Roster
Since the 2019 season, Messiah field hockey has lost a group of key contributors. A total of nine players have moved on since the championship-clinching 2019 campaign, with three players (Hannah Palm, Mackenzie Brubaker, Kristen Musser) earning All-MAC Commonwealth honors in 2019. However, with players leaving the program, opportunities arise.  Messiah field hockey welcomes five first-year members and a transfer student to the squad. The first-year players, Leah Bryner (forward), Jenna Lutz (forward), Teagan Murrie (forward/midfielder), Liz Ong (midfielder), and Jaden Keister (goalkeeper) will all look to make contributions on the field this season to bring home Messiah's 27th conference championship. Joining the first-year players is Kate Dickow, a transfer from the University of Richmond, and seven sophomores who saw action during an abbreviated spring 2021 schedule, helping Messiah to win its four matches.
The Falcons return a total of 13 players, highlighted by 2019 All-MAC Commonwealth honorees Nicole Shank, Jennie Young, and Claire Myers. Myers, a defender, recorded two defensive saves, while Shank tallied five goals and two assists as both players received Second Team honors. Young was a key contributor during the 2019 season as well, dishing out seven assists, tied for second highest on the team, while adding a goal at Johns Hopkins to earn herself an All-MAC Commonwealth honorable mention. Other important returners include Makayla Malcolm (6 goals, 3 assists), Abby Boyer (7 goals), Nicole Shank (5 goals, 2 assists), Jess Davis (3 goals, 2 assists), and Ashley Levesque (4 goals). The Falcons also return goalkeeper Keera Dupler, who notched 49:23 of shutout play in 2019.

Schedule
After clashing with the Red Devils on the road to begin the season, Messiah returns home the following Saturday (9/4) to host the University of Mary Washington at 1:00 p.m. for its home opener. Three non-conference games to circle on the Falcons' schedule include home meetings with Salisbury University (9/11), The College of New Jersey (9/18), and Ursinus College (9/29). Of Messiah's five losses during the 2019 campaign, three of them came to these teams. The Falcons look to avenge their 2019 setbacks in Grantham this fall opposite these formidable opponents.
Messiah opens its MAC Commonwealth play on the road at Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday, September 22. The Falcons' schedule features four home conference matches against York College of Pa. (9/25), Albright College (10/2), Eastern University (10/16), and Stevenson University (10/27). Entering the 2021 campaign, Messiah has posted five-straight seasons of undefeated conference play and look to continue its success against MAC Commonwealth competition.

Coaches
Head coach Brooke Good returns to the helm of Messiah field hockey for her tenth season. Good has guided the Falcons to nine-consecutive MAC Commonwealth Championships, sporting an overall record of 144-31 (55-3 MAC Commonwealth). Joining Good as assistant coaches are Jen Jacobs (23rd season), Danae Hollenbach (10th season), Kourtney Joyce (fifth season), Ashley Matarrese (sixth season), and Megan Wetzel (first season).
